Carl Rinsch to Direct Alien Prequel
Earlier yesterday, rumors were coming out of horror site Bloody-Disgusting that 20th Century Fox was interested in relaunching the "Alien" franchise with some sort of reboot or remake, following the recent news that Robert Rodriguez would be doing the same thing for 20th Century Fox's other sci-fi creature franchise, Predator.
While there was no confirmation from the Fox camp or the trades, Collider's roving reporter "Frosty" cornered director Tony Scott at the press conference for his own remake of The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 to get confirmation and learned that Scott-Free Productions is indeed producing a remake with director Carl Rinsch helming. They hope that the movie, which is meant act as a prequel to Ridley Scott's original 1979 classic Alien, will be shooting by the end of the year.
The original B-D story suggested that they would return to the original concept of just one alien creature, and that they'd be looking for a new "Ripley".

A prequel to Alien is in the works, but who is going to direct it?
When word leaked earlier this week that Ridley Scott was working on a prequel to his 30-year-old sci-fi classic, the original Alien, fans pounced on the news. But the project may have already hit its first speed bump: The filmmakers and Fox, the studio that owns the rights to the franchise, seem to have conflicting ideas about who should direct. Scott plans to produce and had handpicked commercial director Carl Erik Rinsch — whose ads for German electronics company Saturn are known for their futuristic flourishes — to make his feature debut. Rinsch's selection is complicated by the rumor that he's romantically involved with Scott's daughter, Jordan, also a commercial helmer. (Reps for both Jordan Scott and Rinsch did not respond to calls to confirm.) Sources at Fox, however, tell EW that the studio is not interested in greenlighting a prequel unless Scott himself directs. Scott and his reps didn’t respond to calls for comment. But Tony Scott, Ridley's brother and producing partner, was unequivocal in his support for Rinsch when asked about the project last weekend at the junket for his movie The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3. ''Carl is doing the prequel to Alien,'' Tony told a reporter from Collider.com, before adding: ''I'm excited because Ridley created the original and Carl is one of the family.'' Just which ''family,'' personal or professional or both, was unclear.

Ridley Scott Confirmed to Direct Alien Prequel
After months of rumor and speculation, Variety confirms that 20th Century Fox plans to keep the "Alien" franchise alive with a prequel film that will be directed by original helmer Ridley Scott. The announcement that Fox has hired a writer comes just two months after the 30th Anniversary of Scott's original sci-fi horror film which launched a series of movie sequels, a number of comic books, and two movies that pit the Aliens against Fox's other creature franchise, the Predator. Screenwriter Jon Spaihts has been hired to write the prequel after the studio was impressed by his work on two space thrillers, both for Keanu Reeves, called Passengers and Shadow 19.

Ridley Scott Talks Alien Prequel
Empire magazine got a chance to talk to director Ridley Scott about the planned Alien prequel.
"It's a brand new box of tricks," said Scott. "We know what the road map is, and the screenplay is now being put on paper. The prequel will be a while ago. It's very difficult to put a year on 'Alien,' but [for example] if 'Alien' was towards the end of this century, then the prequel story will take place thirty years prior."
It was announced this summer that Jon Spaihts was writing the script for the prequel.

Ridley Scott Dishes Alien Prequel Details
Now that Ridley Scott is on the press circuit to talk about Robin Hood, Alien prequel talk is resurfacing. And it's no longer just a pipe dream. Scott says it's happening - a visual palette is being designed, concept art is being hashed out and a script is being finalized. But what's it about? Here are excerpts from MTV's interview.
"It's set in 2085, about 30 years before Sigourney [Weaver's character Ellen Ripley]. It's fundamentally about going out to find out 'Who the hell was that Space Jockey?' The guy who was sitting in the chair in the alien vehicle — there was a giant fellow sitting in a seat on what looked to be either a piece of technology or an astronomer's chair ... Our man [Tom Skerritt as Captain Dallas] climbs up and says "There's been an explosion in his chest from the inside out — what was that?" I'm basically explaining who that Space Jockey — we call him the Space Jockey — I'm explaining who the space jockeys were ... [The film] is about the discussion of terraforming — taking planets and planetoids and balls of earth and trying to terraform, seed them with the possibilities of future life."
Scott says he'll be approaching H.R. Giger to talk creature designs in an effort to create something new because he feels, "The alien in a sense, as a shape, is worn out." Very interesting.
Dark Horse Comics explored the whole "Space Jockey" story long ago.
Also, sources tell ShockTillYouDrop.com that by the time the Fox Alien Anthology Blu-Ray set comes along at the end of this year, we could very well see a "sneak peek" of Scott's Alien prequel!

First of Two(!) 'Alien' Prequels Will in Fact Be 3-D
A quick news brief to go along with the massive Alien prequel report posted last week. Website Collider caught up with Ridley Scott at a recent junket for Robin Hood where he revealed that the forthcoming prequel will in fact be in 3D. "Of course, it’ll be 3D," he stated also declaring that he doesn't see a difference between shooting in 3-D and post-converting (something I find very concerning). On another note, while Scott is already taking a trip back to the franchise he created back in '79, he's looking to do it more than once! "It’ll be two. It’ll be prequel one and two. Then Alien 1," he tells the site explaining right now he's focused on the first. Jon Spaihts has been working on a screenplay for 20th Century Fox, who I hope doesn't f*ck this up (too).
