The indie drama Hounddog is written and directed by Deborah Kampmeier. Dakota Fanning stars as a precocious but troubled young girl who finds meaning in the music of Elvis Presley. The film co-stars Robin Wright Penn and David Morse.

| Controversy continues to escalate over a brief scene in the Sundance-entered film Hounddog in which a character, played by 12-year-old Dakota Fanning, is raped by a teenager. The rape, which takes place during a thunderstorm, shows two brief flashes of Fanning's face and her voice can be heard shouting "Stop it!" on the soundtrack, but there is no nudity and no graphic description of the rape. New York Sun writer Darrell Hartman wrote, "What the scene makes clear more than anything is that the filmmakers ... are as horrified by the rape of a child as the rest of us." However, FoxNews.com's movie writer Roger Friedman wrote, "The rape scene, no matter how it's spun, is disturbing and unsettling in fictional terms. In real life, though, it's creepier to think that Dakota's parents considered this a scene that was appropriate for their daughter." Fanning herself told today's (Wednesday) edition of USA Today: "Pretty much everybody who talked about [the scene] attacked my mother, which I did not appreciate. That was extremely uncalled for and hurtful." (Imdb.com) |

Buyers Shunning 'Hounddog'
The controversial movie Hounddog, which includes a fleeting scene in which a character played by 12-year-old actress Dakota Fanning is raped by a teenage boy, is not likely to attract a distributor at the Sundance Film Festival, FoxNews.com's Roger Friedman observed Wednesday. "No one wants it after the terrible reviews," one distributor told Friedman. In fact, reviews have been mixed and virtually none have been critical of the handling of the rape scene. "This is a fairly generic, pretentiously artsy coming-of-age movie set in late 1950s Alabama, where the clichés are thicker than the kudzu," the New York Post's Lou Lumenick commented in today's (Thursday) editions. Todd McCarthy grumbled in Variety: "Aside from Fanning and the controversy, the film has nothing going for it commercially." But writer-director Deborah Kampmeier told Entertainment Weekly that her lawyers have been negotiating with potential distributors. "Look," she said, "some people are going to love this film, some people are going to hate it."
