Jessica Alba: ''I Can't Wait For My Baby to be Brown''
In Latina's March 2008 cover story, Jessica Alba gets personal with Editor-in-Chief Mimi Valdés Ryan and directly responds to the rumors that have resulted in her now-commonly used nickname, "Jessica 'Don't Call Me Latina' Alba." Check out some of her revealing answers below, and don't forget to pick up the full story when the issue hits newsstands on February 19!
On her reluctance to walk the red carpet at Latin events: "I'll support those shows, but I can't go on the press lines and have people make me feel bad about myself. Life is too short. I can't change how I grew up, and I shouldn't have to apologize for it. I know I feel close to the Latin community, because that's what I grew up with."
On claims that she's proud to have cut loose from her Mexican roots: "I never said that. Cut loose from what? What the hell are they talking about? Why would I want to cut loose from the only family I know?"
On not learning to speak Spanish as a child: "I wish to God that my dad spoke Spanish to my brother and me, but he didn't grow up with it."
On confusing other men for her dad as a kid: "When I was little, I used to go up to black men and hold their legs, thinking it was my dad all the time. I'd wrap my arms around them, then look up and be like, 'Oh my God!'"
On being accepted for who she is in Hollywood: "I was always trying to figure out: How the hell am I going to be mainstream? How are people going to accept me? When are the going to get a clue that I am American, that this is what America looks like--people like me who are mixed, have different blood, mixed with different ethnicities? When are the people who are hiring for these jobs and writing these screenplays going to realize that?"
On what she wants her baby to look like: "I'm excited for my baby to be brown. I just have to believe the dark gene is going to survive. Cash and I are like, please!" |

Jessica Alba Steps Up
With a baby on the way, the hot star takes a break from Hollywood to give girls in Harlem the pep talk of their lives.
Nestled into the leather upholstery of her chauffeured Lexus SUV, Jessica Alba is layered: tan topcoat, loose-fitting sweater-dress, black tights, voluminous cashmere wrap, high boots. Her portly she-pug, Sid, named for the Sex Pistols' Sid Vicious and done up in hot-pink outerwear, does tight laps around her feet.
We're headed north from her suite at Manhattan's Gramercy Park Hotel to a Harlem school for "Goddess Day" — not a mani-pedi party, but rather an afternoon-long workshop hosted by Step Up Women's Network, a national women's and girl's empowerment organization Alba volunteers for regularly. En route, she fidgets with her boots, inserting drugstore-bought orthotics, and sits in her seat so primly, she's either nervous as hell or the secret spawn of some uppity finishing school. Alba takes me through the perfunctory matter of two upcoming movies: In The Love Guru, she owns a hockey team and falls for a Deepak Chopra/Austin Powers hybrid played by Mike Myers; in The Eye, she appears as a blind violinist who endures freakish complications after corneal-transplant surgery (i.e., she sees dead people). Then we talk about the day ahead.
"I just hope I say the right thing," Alba, 26, tells me. "I think these girls can relate to me, to the fact I didn't have rich parents or any nepotism working in my favor." Her father was in the military, moving the family from Mississippi to Texas before settling them in Laverne, CA. Alba is Mexican on her father's side, and Danish and French on her mother's. "I don't fit in with one race," she says.
In person, Alba looks even younger than she does on-screen — finely and delicately proportioned, almost tiny. Button nose, doll lips. Her eyelashes, however, are the stuff of hyperbole. They're long enough to propel her into flight; a couple of rapid blinks and she'd be gone.
She tells me she misses her boyfriend, Cash Warren, coproducer of an upcoming documentary on gang warfare, who's back in L.A. watching football with her dad. "I'm away too much," Alba laments. "It's not healthy." And yet she knows her problems can't begin to compare with those of the girls from low-income, high-density neighborhoods like the one we're driving through now — girls who sometimes have babies to cure their loneliness. "They aren't ready to be mothers," Alba says. "There's no more 'you' after having a kid, but they're too young to understand that. They see the world in their 10-minute reality. They don't see the big picture because you can't have that kind of perspective when you're that young."
Spoken like a woman who's earned "that kind of perspective." A week from now, Alba will announce her own pregnancy. Soon after, she and Warren will get engaged.
The school, on 106th Street, called the Young Women's Leadership School, is all gray slab and black glass. Eleven New York-area seventh- and eighth-graders wait inside. None of them knows that Alba is coming.
When she walks into the gym, the girls, who are standing on a stage, shriek loudly. Then they hold their breath in case they aren't supposed to scream. Then nobody yells at them for screaming, so they scream again. "Oh, my God!" "Oh, my God!" "I've seen Honey 10 times," one says. Alba bows her head: "Thank you." In most of the world, Honey, the coming-of-age tale of an urban dancer, is uniformly panned. Not so here in Harlem, where the story is set. "I learned to dance for that movie," says Alba, looking at the girl. "I learned to dance from that movie," says the girl, looking at the floor. Others compliment her work in both Fantastic Four flicks — "I like you as a superhero" — and also her role in a recent thriller called Awake. They were probably too young for Alba's breakthrough eight years ago, on the television sci-fi drama Dark Angel. Thankfully, not a single one comments on her stripper work in 2005's Sin City.
Introductions go fast: "Muriel." "Imani." "Norma." "Arena." "Samantha." "Aziza." "Mala." "Diamond." "Aleesha." "Geetanjali." "Destiny." Alba says they have excellent names, and wonders aloud why her mom, Cathy, who is sitting in the back, gave her such an ordinary one. Then Alba sits among them in a circle.
The girls seem awed by her, but Alba knows how to keep it real. "Nobody believed I could make it," she tells them, "and the industry still doesn't." Later, when a girl asks what she likes least about her job, Alba, cross-legged on the checkerboard linoleum, pauses, gathers, and releases: "There's a lot of pressure on women to fulfill certain fantasies. They expect you to be a little bit of a tart, to flirt with all the men. A lot of women do it. But I'm not doing that. I talk with these guys about their wives and kids right away. When they say inappropriate things, I let them, because boys will be boys, but I'm not looking to participate in their conversations."
The girls are locked on Alba, sitting as close to her as possible without sitting on her. They look weathered in a way Alba never will, unless it's for a role. Her hair glints in the light. It possesses an haute caramel confectionery brilliance. But something happens when she sits in their circles, participating in various trust-building exercises. She seems to spread her luster. Each girl's face brightens considerably as the day moves on, and Alba starts to blend in.
On being a role model: “When I was a little girl, I always wanted someone to look up to. I think identity was a big deal to me because I didn’t fit in with one certain race. I always wanted someone who looked like me, who was a positive role model.”
On being bullied at school: “I had a lot of haters. They’d unzip my backpack so my books would fall out. They’d tie my shoes together. They’d ‘accidentally’ spill lunches on me.”
On Hollywood’s perception of women: “There’s a lot of pressure on women to fulfill certain fantasies. They expect you to be a little bit of a tart, to flirt with all the men. A lot of women do it. But I’m not doing that. I talk with these guys about their wives and kids right away. When they say inappropriate things, I let them, because boys will be boys, but I’m not looking to participate in their conversations.”

Alba Wows Geeks at Oscars' Tech Fest
At the first Academy Award presentations of the year, 20 computer geeks graciously accepted honors for their work on particle flow simulation technology - stuff that makes water scenes in the movies look more realistic.
With an end to the writers strike in sight, and the prospect of a reassuringly stylish Oscars ceremony on the minds of most everyone in the industry, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts kept its Scientific and Technical Awards dinner Saturday night as charmingly unglamorous as ever. A magician provided the pre-meal entertainment, Jessica Alba showed up to present the awards - and be gawked at - and nerddom was held up as something to celebrate.
"Fluid effects rock and all of us who work in fluids know this," one honoree, Nafees Bin Zafar, said earnestly.
With all the writing for the show done by an Academy administrator who isn't part of the Writers Guild, picket lines were nowhere to be seen. And though the three-month walkout by Hollywood writers wasn't mentioned once by awards winners, Academy President Sid Ganis was giddy before the meal over prospects for a settlement over the weekend and a green light for a full-fledged Oscar ceremony Feb. 24. Organizers had been forced to prepare for two Oscar shows - one with writers and stars and one without. "Hopefully, I'll be getting a call on my cell phone from those who are involved in all this," Ganis said. "If we have a go, then I'll call (telecast producer) Gil (Cates) right away. ... I can't wait. I so hope we can say 'Plan A.'"
Alba was visibly pregnant in a frilly gray dress as she nimbly picked her way through a script laden with difficult technical references like "semi-Lagrangian" (it's a mathematical process used in special-effects software that simulates gas clouds). The star of "The Eye" was the subject of several awkward sidelong glances from winners, all but one of whom were male.
"For a computer geek like me, it's really sexy to hear Jessica talk about stable, semi-Lagrangian fluid flows," quipped Duncan Brinsmead of Autodesk, a developer of the tools for visual effects. "They said I got 60 seconds so I might just spend the last 15 realizing I'm 10 feet away from the most beautiful woman on the planet," said Ron Fedkiw, a Stanford University associate professor and consultant to Industrial Light and Magic on fluid simulation. "And no restraining order this time."
Other winners were more demure. Honored for the invention of pint-sized fog machines, Jorg Pohler remained silent as if playing Penn to Rudiger Kleinke's Teller. While Kleinke read an acceptance speech, Pohler smiled sublimely as puffs of smoke wafted up from inside his tuxedo. Screens at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel ballroom displayed clips of movies that used the honored technologies, including "Happy Feet," "Poseidon" and "Transformers." The only face from more well-known Oscar categories to make an appearance was supporting actor nominee Javier Bardem in a clip of "No Country for Old Men."
Makeup artist Christien Tinsley developed the "Tinsley Transfer" process of self-adhesive markings that made Bardem's face appear bloody and beaten in the film. Most winners received certificates, plaques or a medallion; only two actual Oscars were handed out. The Eastman Kodak Company received a statuette for its widely used Vision2 color negative films, and David Grafton got one for his engineering of lenses used to create special effects in films including "Ghostbusters" and "Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back."
