For someone not always (OK, never) seen as a serious thespian, Jessica Alba certainly has the "lady doth protest too much" routine down pat. The 27-year-old mama-to-be attempts to set the record straight on her career priorities in the new issue of Allure: Commerce over art every time, unless there's a bikini involved. When asked why she hasn't appeared in more independent, art-house fare, the expectant star gives a refreshingly candid answer, if not one that'll likely keep Sundance at bay for quite some time.
"To me, box office is the most important thing," she says. "If the movie makes money, then I'm fine." You gotta give the girl some credit for honesty. "I grew up not having a lot. I'm really happy to be making money, not depending on a man, and not having to suffer to survive in this business. Struggling is not fun. Been there, done that." Despite her share of skimpily clad roles, Alba grouses about being objectified. "They always play up your sexuality, because that's what gets men into the theaters," she says. "And I never really gave a s--t about all that stuff!"
Though not, it should be said, due to any prudish reservations about the topic. "I don't think sex is a big deal. I hated the hypocrisy of it. Men can do whatever, and it's acceptable." There again Alba is putting her money where her mouth is, possibly winning over a more feminist base, but effectively writing herself out of any future safe-sex endorsement campaigns. Not that there's any money in PSAs, anyway.
"I can't say it was a total accident, because you're aware of when you're being careful and when you're not," the knocked-up star says of the bun in her ever-expanding oven. "It just happened so soon!" "It," of course, being her gestating celebuspawn with fiancé Cash Warren, a pregnancy that Alba is the first to admit hasn't gone entirely smoothly.
"I kicked him out, but it wasn't like that—totally. When you're pregnant, your emotions are more tense. If the shoes are in the wrong place, you kind of lose your mind. Then he just laughs, gives me a hug and tells me it's okay."
And, we'll assume, hides the bikinis.
   
Some highlights from the interview:
On Her Steamy Public Image: "[Hollywood] always play[s] up your sexuality, because that's what gets men into the theaters. And I never really gave a s--- about all that stuff! It's nothing to be ashamed of. But it is definitely not what I am about by any means!"
On Owning Her Sexuality: "I don't think I was comfortable with my sexuality until I was an adult, probably, like, 22 – that's when I stopped apologizing and stopped feeling ashamed. I did the Vagina Monologues in L.A. That made me proud."
On Sex Before Marriage: "I never believed women had to be virgins when they got married, or that a woman has to fall in love with a guy just because they're having sex. I don't think sex is a big deal. I hated the hypocrisy of it. Men can do whatever, and it's acceptable."

Sehr sympathisch, Frau Alba! Es sollten mehr prominente Amerikaner und Amerikanerinnen so offen über Sex reden, wie sie es tun. Denn nur wenn man darüber redet und es nicht tot schweigt, kann man über Verhütung reden. Ihre liberale Haltung ist aufgrund ihres multiethnischen Backgrounds aber auch nicht so ganz verwunderlich... Und was ihr derzeitiges Rollenprofil anbetrifft stimmt eben auch das Sprichwort: "Sex sells!". Sie muss nur aufpassen, dass sich die Schublade für andere Rollenprofile und damit auch die Tür zu einer längeren Schauspielkarriere nicht schliesst. "The Eye" ist dafür ein guter Anfang. |

Ich denke sie hat ihre Einstellung nach Michael W. geändert. Denn sie wollten ja heiraten. Und da war sie noch ein Girlie und toal schüchtern. Jetzt ist sie reifer gewurden.
Find ich sehr gut, dass sie so offen über Sex redet. Das mit dem Virgin in die Ehe gehen, ich denke das ist in der heutigen Zeit total überholt und auch die Amerikaner sollten mal ihr Anschauungsbild darüber ändern.  |

Für uns als Europäer ist es selbstverständlich so über Sex zu reden. Die Lage in den USA ist jedoch um einiges krasser (Meine Freundin ist zur Zeit in den USA zum Studium. Ich kann dir Geschichten von Begebenheiten erzählen, von denen ich zuvor glaubte, das sie nur in mittelalterlich-rückständigen Ländern geschehen würden, aber nicht in einem Land wie den USA - einer westlichen, hochzivilsierten Gesellschaft.). In den USA ist die "Kein Sex vor der Ehe!"-Bewegung sehr stark verbreitet. Hollywood ist an sich zwar sehr liberal. Es lebt aber auch von der amerikanischen Publicity. Eine solche Aussage von Alba als aufstrebende Schauspielerin, die weiterhin Rollen angeboten bekommen will, würde ich also mit der Haltung der "Dixie Chicks" zum Irakkrieg gleichsetzen. Insgesamt gesehen ist die Haltung von Alba also sehr mutig. |

Das weiß ich, dass die USA in solchen Sachen hinter hingt. Deswegen finde ich es ja auch sehr mutig von ihr, wenn sie diese Entscheidung auch öffentlich vertritt. (P.S. Ich kenne einige Sachen in den USA, aber das gehört hier nicht rein und wenn wir darüber diskutieren wollen, dann schick mir eine pm.  ) |

But they don't talk about her." But there are also anecdotes that put her attitude into perspective, like how one (unnamed) director insisted that she fall on her knees and bark like a dog during an audition (she refused). Seriously, can you imagine?
Alba also talks about her sometimes difficult relationship with fiancé Cash Warren ("Yes, I kicked him out. But it wasn't like that—totally. When you're pregnant, your emotions are more tense. If the shoes are in the wrong place, you kind of lose your mind."), what it's like to actually eat now that she's pregnant ("Before this, it was coffee for breakfast, yogurt for lunch.") and how she plans on taking charge of her career once the baby is born ("I'm not complaining, I like how I've I've gotten here—but it's not how I have to stay.") Auf der diesjährigen Maxim Hot 100 List belegt Jessica Alba nur Platz 34: It’s been a big year for one of our favorite Hollywood Jessicas: five starring movie roles, a new fiancé, and a mini-Jessica (God willing) on the way. Realizing the owners were nowhere in sight, they brought the dogs home and called the number on their tags. Well, guess who answered the phone? Alba’s fiancé, Cash Warren! Warren explained to them that the dogs belonged to Alba and that she would come by to pick them up pronto, a source reports.
“Jessica Alba rolled up in her car and explained that they just moved in down the street and things were pretty hectic,” the source said. Alba thanked her new neighbors profusely before hopping back into her car to drive the dogs home.
