Star Trek Sequel on the Fast Track
As Paramount Pictures is moving forward with a sequel to its May 8 release, Star Trek, and has hired Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof to write the screenplay.
Variety says J.J. Abrams, who directed and produced the new film, is on board to produce the follow-up alongside his Bad Robot partner Bryan Burk. No decision has been made yet on whether Abrams will direct the sequel.
Orci, Kurtzman and Lindelof also are receiving producing credit on the sequel.
The story is still in the embryonic stage, but the trio are aiming to deliver their script to the Melrose studio by Christmas for what would likely be a summer 2011 release.
"Obviously we discussed ideas, but we are waiting to see how audiences respond next month," Kurtzman said. "With a franchise rebirth, the first movie has to be about origin. But with a second, you have the opportunity to explore incredibly exciting things. We'll be ambitious about what we'll do."
Though Orci and Kurtzman have worked together as a writing team for more than 12 years, the duo has worked with Lindelof on only one screenplay - DreamWorks' Cowboys & Aliens, which they are currently writing together.

New Star Trek 2 Rumors Start to Emerge
The film has only been out for a week, but that hasn't stopped fans from speculating on what they will see in the next chapter of JJ Abrams recently rebooted and refurbished Star Trek series. Our friend Devin over at Chud recently published a list of the five things Star Trek 2 should avoid. (You can read that list here.) Not mentioned is more Captain Pike. Which should bode well for Bruce Greenwood, since the film seems to be heading in that direction.
We just got off the phone with Greenwood after chatting with him about the great weekend Star Trek had at the box office. In speaking with the actor, he revealed that he has created quite a backstory for Captain Pike, which JJ Abrams hopes to utilize in the upcoming sequel. Unlike the original Pike, Greenwood's interpretation of the character will eventually rise from his wheelchair to one-day walk again. While this isn't exactly news, Greenwood hinted that Pike's personal story, as it pertains to this version of the new Star Trek timeline, would be tied directly into Captain Robert April, who, according to the Star Trek animated series, was the original Captain of the Starship Enterprise. April was only seen in one episode of the animated series. His voice was supplied by James Doohan, otherwise known as Scotty, and in the Star Trek Encyclopedia, his profile is accompanied by a picture of series creator Gene Roddenberry in a Starfleet uniform. Neither Paramount nor Roddenberry ever considered the animated series part of the official Star Trek cannon, which has led to debate about April's place as the first captain of the Enterprise. The character is certainly up for interpretation, as a human actor has never before portrayed him on screen. Who do you think would be perfect for the role?
Official news of Star Trek 2 heading into production hasn't been announced yet, but as the box office grosses continue to pour in, you can expect to hear about it soon.

They say they’re debating between “the exploration sci-fi plot where the unknown and nature itself is somehow an adversary or the villain model. That’s an active discussion we’re having right now. In terms of thinking about more than one movie, we want the movie to be self-contained in a way, but we’re discussing the idea of having a couple of threads where if the second movie works, you could pick up into a cohesive whole. No thread more exciting and shocking for me when in “Star Trek III” you realize that Spock grabbed Bones and downloaded his Katra into him. When I saw “Star Trek II” I was like, “What’s going on here?” and two years later, you’re watching it and you’re like “They’re geniuses! They’re geniuses!” So we’re trying to think is there a version of that but again, “Star Trek II” does not rely on that thread, even though it turns out to be a thread. So we’re thinking in those terms.”

Both the Los Angeles Times and SCI FI Wire got a chance to talk to J.J. Abrams about the status of the Star Trek sequel and Mission: Impossible IV. Abrams gave this interesting quote to the former about the new "Star Trek" film:
"The ambition for a sequel to 'Star Trek' is to make a movie that's worthy of the audience and not just another movie, you know, just a second movie that feels tacked on. The first movie was so concerned with just setting up the characters -- their meeting each and galvanizing that family -- that in many ways a sequel will have a very different mission. it needs to do what [the late 'Trek' creator Gene] Roddenberry did so well, which is allegory. It needs to tell a story that has connection to what is familiar and what is relevant. It also needs to tell it in a spectacular way that hides the machinery and in a primarily entertaining and hopefully moving story. There needs to be relevance, yes, and that doesn't mean it should be pretentious. If there are simple truths -- truths connected to what we live -- that elevates any story -- that's true with any story."

Star Trek Scribes Talk Sequel
Star Trek was one of this year's biggest movies and left fans eagerly wanting more. Unfortunately, it looks like audiences will have to wait a few more years for the sequel to hit theaters.
At the 2009 Screenwriting Expo which is being held in downtown Los Angeles this year, ComingSoon.net asked Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, the writers of Star Trek, if they could give us any updated info as to where the storyline will be going in the next film. While they're still very much in the beginning stages and couldn't give us many details, they did give a possible release date year.
"We're rereading some of our favorite 'Star Trek' novels now and watching the original series again. The honest answer is we don't know yet," Orci said. "We think it's going to be a 2012 release, but I'm not sure," he continued.
"Originally we thought we were going to have to have the script in by Christmas, but the release changed so certainly within the next eight months I'd say," Kurtzman told us.
We tried to find out where the two writers would like to see the story go and Orci said: "They're established now in the second movie and they're finally a crew so it will resemble what you see in terms of they are already who they are."
The pair have focused their attention towards feature films the last few years, but recently returned to TV to work on "Fringe" with their old friend J.J. Abrams, who they wrote for on "Alias." They admitted it was for partly selfish reasons.
"When J.J. said he wanted to create a show with me it's like 'Screw you buddy,'" Orci joked. "Also he had studio commitments to Warner Brothers and we wanted him to direct 'Star Trek.' We feared he wouldn't be able to do it if we didn't help fulfill those obligations so we did," he continued.
"We wanted him to be as focused on it as he could be on that so we're like, we'll absolutely help you. We would have done it anyway, but also it freed him up to do 'Star Trek.'

Star Trek 2 to Start Pre-Production Next Year
It seems that a highly-anticipated sequel could get under way next year, according to one crew member of the U.S.S. Enterprise. MTV recently spoke with Star Trek actress Zoe Saldana who revealed that the sequel Star Trek 2 will start coming together next year.
"I spoke to J.J. and Bryan Burk, his producing partner at Bad Robot, and they are still in the middle of building the script with Alex Kurtzman and Bob Orci, and we'll probably be going into pre-production around this time next year."
There has been no word yet on when the film might start shooting, but we'll certainly keep you posted on all Star Trek 2 news as soon as we have more information.

It looks like Paramount Pictures has decided at least on a tentative release date for J. J. Abrams' anticipated Untitled Star Trek Sequel as it stakes claim to the coveted pre-4th of July weekend of June 29, 2012. At this time, it is the only movie scheduled for June that summer, and absolutely nothing is known of the sequel except that one expects most of the cast introduced in the first movie to return.

After the WGA Star Trek screening and panel earlier in the week, Roberto Orci spent a little time doing a video interview for TrekMovie. The writer talked about meeting Walter Koenig, gave an update on the status of the sequel, explained why writing it feels harder than the first, and also revealed how fan interaction at TrekMovie has worked its way into meetings with the Star Trek Supreme Court.

* Orci sat with Walter Koenig at TV Hall of fame induction of Gene Roddenberry and "picked his brain" and got "a lot of great Star Trek stories"
* Orci has trouble "internalizing" being nominated by WGA (for Best Adapted Screenplay for Star Trek), but feels honored to be recognized by fellow writers
* The "Star Trek Supreme Court" (Abrams, Lindelof, Burk, Kurtzman, & Orci) "have an area" they are "talking about" for the Star Trek sequel, and the "opinions are starting to form"
* Orci expects (like first Trek) the story process will take longer than scripting: it’s all about figuring out the story first, writing it will be quick" [during panel discussion Orci said that the first film took four months to come up with a story and two months two do the script]
* Still consider themselves in "the early stages of story development" but feel the film can go into pre-production in 2010
* Considers the sequel more "daunting" because the second film has fewer constraints, noting ‘Now that we have absolute freedom, it comes with absolute responsibility and it is daunting."
* Looking to continue with "a mix" of new story ideas, and using elements from classic Star Trek that will "harmonize with canon", but "still open to something fully original and we will not do a remake".

Immediately following a very well-received Cowboys & Aliens panel at this weekend's WonderCon in San Francisco, producer and screenwriter Robert Orci spoke with press backstage about the film, also dropping a few details about the upcoming Star Trek sequel which he's scripting alongside writing partner Alex Kurtzman.
In addition to saying that he thinks that production will begin this fall, Orci admitted that specific fan reactions to the original film have directly influenced the sequel's narrative and dropped a few hints about what fans can expect.
"Everyone said [Kirk] is too young to become Captain," he explains, "So maybe in the next movie, somebody goes, 'Man, you sure became Captain young and fast.' You start to incorporate people's opinions... If it's organic to the story and you find someone who doesn't think too highly of Kirk because he maybe skipped a few steps, that's maybe a fun thing to consider. That comes from a fan reaction and maybe gives you a story point."
Rightfully proud of the 2009 film, Orci still recognizes that there were other issues with the project that didn't sit well with the entire fanbase and hopes that the sequel might offer a chance to rectify some of them.
"[Fans] wanted more character time with everybody," he adds, "and, because that was an origin story for 'Star Trek,' everyone had to come in at a certain point. Now everyone is going to be there from the beginning, so they're going to get that. Everyone sure hated engineering. They thought it looked like a brewery, which it was. I'll pass that on to J.J. [Abrams] and see what he says."
While the first draft of the script is complete, Orci's job is far from over and plans to be working on the sequel for some time to come.
"We'll be working and tweaking that story through shooting," he says, "This time we don't have a strike, so we'll actually be able to change things on the set. On the last movie, we handed in the script and that was it. You couldn't change a word. This one feels like we've got all the time in the world."

It's Official: J.J. Abrams to Direct Star Trek 2
Vulture reports that J.J. Abrams has officially committed to direct Star Trek 2 for Paramount Pictures.
Pre-production is currently underway and the script is expected to be done by month's end. Abrams will start shooting the anticipated film this winter.
The Star Trek sequel was originally scheduled to be released on July 29, 2012, but Paramount put G.I. Joe 2 in that spot instead when it looked like Abrams wouldn't be able to make the date.
While Abrams himself couldn't start working on Star Trek 2 until he was done with Super 8, the article says that part of the delay has also been Alex Kurtzman, who has been working on the script with Roberto Orci. Kurtzman had been busy working on finishing directing Welcome to People.
A new release date for the film has not yet been set.

J.J. Abrams untitled Star Trek sequel may have found its villain. Variety reports that, while nothing is yet official, Benicio Del Toro is expected to be offered the role imminently.
Famous for his secrecy, Abrams has reportedly not yet revealed even to the actor what the role will be, though production is expected to begin this January.
Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, John Cho and Anton Yelchin are expected to all reprise their roles as members of the Enterprise crew with Abrams back in the director's chair and a script again from Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman.

Star Trek Sequel Will Shoot in 2D and Possibly IMAX
While it was reported last month that J.J. Abrams' untitled Star Trek sequel was planning a 3D release on May 17, 2013, the director tells MTV News that the film will shoot in 2D and will be post-converted. The more exciting news, however, is that Abrams is interested in potentially bringing IMAX to the final frontier.
"We're shooting on film, 2D, and then we'll do a good high-end conversion like the 'Harry Potter' movie and all that," says Abrams. "Luckily, with our release date now we have the months needed to do it right, because if you rush it, it never looks good... We were talking about [shooting in IMAX] and I would love to do it. IMAX is my favorite format; I'm a huge fan."
Abrams is also one of the producers behind this week's Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, which opened last Friday on IMAX screens. This morning it was announced that the film (also a Paramount release) broke December IMAX records.
The untitled Star Trek sequel is set to feature the return of John Cho, Simon Pegg, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban and Anton Yelchin with all-new roles for Alice Eve and Peter Weller. The film's central villain has yet to be cast, though several actors are said to be in contention.

Benedict Cumberbatch Also Joins Star Trek Sequel
Earlier today, it was reported that "Doctor Who" star Noel Clarke joined J.J. Abrams' Untitled Star Trek Sequel, and now Deadline is saying that another BBC star has joined the cast, and it's Benedict Cumberbatch, star of their show "Sherlock" playing an undisclosed role.
Cumberbatch can currently be seen in Steven Spielberg's War Horse and the adaptation of John Le Carré's Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, which expands nationwide this Friday. He's also been cast to portray the dragon Smaug (using performance capture) and voice the Necromancer in Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit" movies.
J.J.Abrams' Untitled Star Trek Sequel is set for a May 17, 2013 release.
