Das deutsche Original von Oliver Hirschbiegel zeigt ein schiefgelaufenes sozial-psychologisches Experiment, welches größtenteils auf dem "Stanford Prison Experiment" basiert: Freiwillige werden nach Losverfahren in zwei Gruppen eingeteilt, Wächter und Gefangene. Die Wächter geraten in einen Machtrausch und das Experiment eskaliert, als die Gefangenen eine Rebellion starten.
