Quote:
The Love Guru Sneaks at ShoWest

While most attendants at this year's ShoWest convention knew that they would be getting an early look at a rough version of DreamWorks Animation's upcoming animated film Kung Fu Panda, they probably didn't realize that Paramount would be giving them a sneak peek at Michael Myers' first live action comedy in over five years as they showed four clips from The Love Guru, coming out this summer. (Check out our new still from the movie, as well pictures from Ben Stiller's new comedy Tropic Thunder and Kung Fu Panda via the Film Database.)

The surprise was revealed as DreamWorks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg was telling the audience about how much success the company has had with the "Shrek" franchise which was given a screening at ShoWest seven years prior and that he wished Shrek could be with him now. Michael Myers walked out on stage and stated that he was there as good luck for Katzenberg, and then started hitting on Katzenberg to try to embarrass the CEO in front of the audience. Myers then took the microphone to talk about the movie and he introduced Jessica Alba as "the mother of his child," and she came out, looking very pregnant, to chide him for lying like that and the two of them started riffing a bit about how entertainment journalists would print whatever they say without fact-checking, they pimped the movie a bit more and then stepped aside to let the footage speak for itself.

The first clip introduced Myers' Guru Pitka as he appeared in front of an admiring audience of his followers for him to give his spiel, talking about the five points of his ashram, which spelled "E. I. E. I. O.", and talking about his mentors, all gurus with long silly names that acted as double entendres like Guru Tugginmypudha (played by Sir Ben Kingsley) but he focused specifically on one whose name sounded like Guru "Has A Small Wiener" and his sayings, a few which he recited, noting how they got somewhat cruder as he became crazy from syphilis.

The second clip opens with the Guru Pitka and his man-servant performing a duet on sitar and acoustic guitar--sorry, I can't remember what song they were playing--but then Alba's character Jane enters, looking hot as always, which Pitka points out: "You look breathtaking… as do I." He asks her if she's hungry and claps his hands for them to bring his meal. They sit at a table and he offers her a local delicacy from his country, which is two lychees in a pocket, an Indian dish lovingly referred to as "Nuts in a sling" and sure enough, the exotic food item looks like a pair of testicles. His servant then asks if they'd like their nuts to be crushed, at which he starts beating them with a hammer as Pitka winces with each hit, and then the servant takes them and starts dipping them in a pot of boiling water. Pitka asks Jane if she'd rather have soup and she immediately says "Yes" so he declares "Alligator Soup and make it snappy!" then goes about explaining the double entendre for anyone who didn't get it.

The third clip introduced Justin Timberlake's character Jacques Grande, a Canadian hockey player, who Guru Pitka and his trusty man-servant seem to be stalking. Jacques drives up to his mansion in a flashy white sports car with a red rooster emblazoned on the hood, pulling through the mansion gates, which also have a rooster on them. Pitka tries to sneak onto Grande's mansion complex hiding behind a bush with his transport elephant obviously not being quite as obscured.

We see Justin doing a fairly weak attempt at a Quebec accent as he attempts to woo a very fine looking Meagan Good, suggesting they watch "Fried Green Tomatoes" before telling her his back story, that everyone thinks his mother is a hooker and his father is a lumberjack because he's from Quebec--in fact they are--before he starts serenading her with a Celine Dion song, and he offers her a "Quebec pizza," which is a pop tart with ketchup. (It's not a very funny bit, to be honest.)

Meanwhile, Guru Pitka is approaching the house and he sees a sign that reads, "Warning: Guard Rooster!" and sure enough, there's a rooster that Pitka has a stare-down contest with while Jacques continues his wooing completely oblivious to the tussle going on outside, as we see Pitka struggling with the rooster, getting away before being dragged back into the fight as feathers fly everywhere. Pitka finally wins out and exhausted, he throws himself against the glass patio doors, covered in blood and feathers with the rooster's head between his teeth, scaring Good's character.

The final clip was actually a Bollywood musical number of the Guru Pitka playing the Steve Miller Band's "The Joker" on his sitar as various scenes and gags rapidly cut together in succession with lots of Vern Troyer. Towards the end, Alba appears dressed in Indian garb with dancing girls behind her to sing one refrain of the chorus.

As far as my opinion on whether the clips were funny, well, let's just say that Myers isn't branching out too much from the "Austin Powers" movies so if you find that stuff funny, you'll probably laugh at this as well. Really, the only thing that had me laughing even a little was the fight with the rooster just because it was so outlandish.

Jessica nervous on new Myers film

Jessica Alba has apparently admitted she got the jitters on the first day of shooting new Mike Myers comedy movie The Love Guru.

"It was intimidating," she told Extra. "I was kind of nervous the first day I was there, I have to say, although Mike does a good job of diffusing any of that. But he's the boss and you have to make sure that the boss is happy - he didn't yell at me," she joked.

The actress stars alongside Justin Timberlake, Ben Kingsley and diminutive Austin Powers actor Verne Troyer in the film, which follows Pitka (Mike) a guru who heads to America to get into the self help business.

"I was honoured first of all that he (Mike) asked me to be a part of it," said Jessica, who is currently pregnant with her first baby.

"Going on set every day, he multi tasks like no other. He has so much passion and heart and conviction with everything he's doing in the film, certainly with the message, the comedy and the combination of the two."

"I'm personally a fan of Eastern philosophy and the fact that this movie revolves around something that I feel is nothing but positive energy to put out into the world, is great," she added.

Have Justin Timberlake And Jessica Alba Offended Hindus?

Hindu leaders have asked to view the new Mike Myers movie The Love Guru - also starring Justin Timberlake and Jessica Alba - because they fear it may mock their religion.

In The Love Guru, Myers plays the main character, an American who is raised in an ashram in India. He eventually moves back to US as Guru Pitka to seek fame and fortune in the world of self-help and spirituality. Paramount pictures has agreed a pre-release showing for the religious superiors even though the movie has not yet been completed.

Jessica Rovins, publicist for the film said: It is our full intention to screen the film for Hindu leaders in the U.S. once we have a finished print." Lila D. Sharma, President of India Heritage Panel, released a statement asking the makers of the movie to “secure clean chit from Hindu leaders before its June release”. She added: “Hollywood is trying to make money by laughing at our holy men and in the process creating a stereotype.”

Kurzinhalt

Quote:
Harry,

Last year i wrote in on a screening of Black Christmas so i thought I would share my latest adventure with you. Last night I was lucky enough to attend the first screening of the new Michael Myers movie "The Love Guru". Here is how it went down.

We arrived at the theatre at 6 o'clock on the nose and as soon as we walked through the entry-way we were pulled aside rushed to the theatre, basically stripped searched, and robbed of our camera phones.

We entered the theatre and an hour and ten minutes later a man in a suit who looked like someone who was way more important than he really is, tells us we are the first audience to see the film, and the effects arent complete, and yadda yadda yadda... then they start the movie.

After an hour and forty minutes of typical Mike Myers Schtick... aka: Anagrams, funny sexual names, spastic movements, down right silliness... so after a lot of recycled jokes, a blah storyline, some clever fresh mockery of Indian films, a couple of smiles, a few good laughs, and one almost-to-tears-trying-to-hold-in-an-outburst laugh... it was over.

Jessica Alba was hot... Justin Timberlake was funny... and Vern Troyer proved he can sorta act... but anyway you slice it, midgets equal funny. The hockey scenes were lame (Oh yeah... the movie is about a black superstar hockey player that can't play anymore because the goalie of the opposing team stole his wife and the Toronto Maple Leafs pay a Guru to get them back together. However, the guru has his own agenda to be the worlds greatest Guru so he needs to get on Oprah and figures if he can do this she will put him on) and the last time I checked i thought there were more than 7 or 8 guys on a team... but i suppose that doesn't matter.

Thats about all I have to say about the movie. It was not really memorable like the Austin Powers movies... but it wasn't an unpleasant experience by far.

Always a devoted fan,
Secret Squirel

Quote:
Campus Press sits down with Jessica Alba
An interview about the star's new movie "The Love Guru"

Campus Press freelancer Devon Taylor recently sat down with actress Jessica Alba to talk with her about her new movie.

Campus Press: Working with Mike Meyers, was it hard to keep up with all of the improv?

Jessica Alba: It was fun. It was so much fun. Going to work and not really knowing how that day is going to go and it being so unpredictable and you fly by the seat of your pants is most fun to me, whether it be in comedy or drama or whatever. Certainly in comedy it keeps the energy up and keeps it interesting.

CP: You started your film career with comedies such as "Idle Hands" and "Never Been Kissed" then did a lot of drama and genre films in between - what inspired the return to comedy?

JA: Well, I wanted to do comedy; no one would give me a shot at it. I couldn't even get into rooms to audition for comedy because everyone thought I was you know, too tough or played superheroes and larger than life characters and I wouldn't be able to do comedy and have fun and be playful. Good Luck Chuck was kind of my shot at showing people that I could do it - and then, thank God, people enjoyed it, because it's my favorite thing in the world to do, and now Mike asked me to be in this movie.

CP: You graduated high school when you were only 16. Have you always had acting in mind as a career path?

JA: I did, yeah. I graduated because I was working and I was tutored and I didn't have any school breaks. So you know, when most kids get summer breaks and Christmas vacation and all those things, I didn't have any of that, I was just doing school one-on-one with a tutor all the way through so I just finished early. I finished early in order to give myself two years of working and trying to make it in the business. If I didn't get a good job that I though was going to put me permanently kind of - make me relevant in the business I was just going to go school and figure something else out. I got Dark Angel when I was seventeen, and that was kind of a blessing for me because, you know, I really couldn't imagine doing anything else.

CP: How did it feel working with such "powerhouse" comedy stars such as Dane Cook and now Mike Meyers? Was there a lot of pressure on you to perform?

JA: With Dane it was a little less nerve racking because luckily I think it was his first movie he was starring in and my first comedy, so we were both figuring things out. But with Mike, he is a veteran, so I obviously wanted to hold my own and keep up with him. Certainly when I was improving I would make sure that I stayed quick on my feet and witty and stay in character. It's much more intimidating with someone like Mike Myers that has coined basically every phrase of my life, from "Wayne's World" to "I Married an Ax Murder" to the Austin Powers movies. It was interesting and definitely a pinch me moment everyday on set.

CP: Considering your pregnancy and the fact that you are due soon, what characteristics did you learn from your character in this movie, Jane Bullard, that you will want to instill in your child?

JA: She was really about learning to love herself and not let other people affect the way that she thought about herself. And it's a good life lesson I think for anybody not to allow people in the world to affect how you feel about yourself or what you're going to do in life. It's quite simple. But it's a pretty powerful message.

CP: Since this film is about a love guru, do you have any advice about love of your own?

JA: You definitely need to be on the path of loving yourself before you are capable of sharing your life or your heart with anyone else. A lot of people look for love to validate themselves or to lose themselves in - putting themselves second, and it's easy to get lost in a relationship. But you have to love yourself first before you're even ready for that kind of thing.

CP: ver the last 12 months you've come out with about six different films. What's next for you, more films, or is it time for a break?

JA: I'm taking time off, yes. I worked for about two years straight and it takes a toll on you doing that much and working so hard. I'm really grateful that I got the opportunity to do everything that I did, but I'm excited to just hang out, so I haven't really been reading scripts. I've just been trying to live my life and be normal for a little while before I go right back into being a nomad and jumping from one set to the next and one character to the next.

CP: With all of the films you've been in over the last year, how did you prepare yourself for all of the different roles?

JA: Each movie is completely different. You prepare completely different depending on what kind of demands you have. For "The Eye" I had to learn how to play the violin. I had to go to blind school to learn how to live blind, and try to come off as normal as possible in that environment and be realistic as possible. In this, I had to think on my feet - I had to be on my toes. You have to have tons of energy no matter what time of the day it is. It takes a lot to try and constantly make comedy fresh, new and fun after the twelfth hour of doing the same thing for the second day in a row. It can really die and not be funny and not work - it takes a lot to keep it going and keep it fresh. Luckily I was with Mike and he has this great sort of formula. He always plays music, he cracks jokes, and just keeps the environment really fun and positive. So it was a bit easier to stay in that frame of mind.

CP: I know that Mike (Meyers) is a big hockey fan, but I was wondering if you were or have been, through the process of making this movie, become a hockey fan?

JA: Even if you like watching hockey or enjoy the sport, nothing compares to a true Canadian fan. I mean, it's a lifestyle. It's in the blood. It's pretty extraordinary. I know a few Canadians that live in LA and it is a part of their being. So I can't fairly say to a Canadian I'm a true fan, but I do definitely have an appreciation for it. I totally enjoy watching the game though; it's a pretty tough, really crazy, fun sport.

Quote:
Q & A with Jessica Alba and Mike Myers

In The Love Guru, which hits theaters June 20, Mike Myers plays Pitka, a relationship guru who returns to the States in pursuit of a career. The owner of the Toronto Maple Leafs, played by Jessica Alba, asks for Pitka’s help to mend the heart of Darren Roanoke, a star hockey player whose wife has left him for a rival athlete. Repairing Roanoke’s spirit may be the only way the Leafs can win the Stanley Cup. Alba and Myers chatted with Jayplay during a roundtable interview with other student news publications.

Jessica Alba

You’ve been in a lot of action-based movies, but lately you’ve been doing comedies. Is that the direction you see your career going?

Yes. I started acting because I wanted to make people laugh. I used to make up characters and do voices and basically anything to make my family and friends laugh.

Were you a hockey fan before making this film?

I didn’t know much. I had to take a crash course in hockey. I’m a sports fan, and I can wrap my head around it once I’ve watched a few games. I didn’t know how smelly those guys are—they’re so stinky.

Working with Mike Myers, how did you keep your composure while filming?

I didn’t. None of us on set really did. I would lose it and laugh my ass off.

Who would be a better love guru in real life: You or Mike Myers?

Mike does a pretty good job at it. He’s hilarious, sweet and kind. Not that I’m not, but it’s hard to put yourself in that position.

After starring in this movie, what advice do you have on matters of love?

You definitely need to be on the path of loving yourself before you are capable of sharing your life or your heart with anyone else. I think a lot of people look for love to validate themselves, but you have to love yourself first before you’re even ready for that kind of thing.

Mike Myers

You co-wrote The Love Guru. Was it your childhood dream to watch the Leafs at least compete for the cup?

Sure. I love hockey like religion. I love the Toronto Maple Leafs. I bleed blue. When it looks like we have a chance to win, part of me doesn’t even want to get involved anymore because the heartbreak is too much. I thought, if I don’t see it in my lifetime, I could at least write it in that way of Field of Dreams: If you write it, they will come.

What is your writing process like?

I always have about eight ideas circling the airport and every three and a half years one of those ideas land. With Austin Powers, I was driving home from hockey practice and I heard the song “The Look of Love” by Burt Bacharach. I wondered whatever happened to swingers. My films are handmade, and whatever is on my mind becomes the next thing I work on.

What gave you the idea for the character of Pitka?

After my father died, I went on a spiritual quest and started to become interested in Eastern philosophy. There are some tremendous people out there like, Deepak Chopra and Gary Zukav. It’s a very interesting world, because these people have no sense of humor. What I love about Deepak and Gary is that they understood that to be enlightened is to, in fact, lighten up.

What advice can you give students on love and relationships?

Be happy. That’s it. We’re only on this earth for seconds and we might as well spend the time being happy. I heard an interesting story about George Harrison. After the freaky dude who broke into his house and stabbed him in the head, he was on death’s door. And he had not one regret. He was completely prepared for death, because he had spent 15 years of his life in touch with love.
