Im Mittelpunkt steht der kleine Junge Max, der sich einen Ausflug in den Wald zu den wilden Kerlen ausfantasiert. Die Monsterwesen küren ihn zu ihrem König. Max wird gespielt von Max Records, einer der weiteren Darsteller von Realfiguren ist Paul Dano ("Little Miss Sunshine"). Spike Jonze ("Being John Malkovich") ist der Regisseur und adaptierte das Buch gemeinsam mit Dave Eggers.
