Irgendwie dürfen alle Schauspieler mal einen kleinen Regisseur spielen und durch die Kamera schauen oder? Hab ich schon oft gesehen, find ich gut dass die Regisseure das zulassen.

2007 PREVIEW: 'FANTASTIC FOUR: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER'

Screenwriter Don Payne talks about what’s to come in the further adventures of Marvel’s First Family and why he wants to script a Silver Surfer spin-off.

Galactus is going to be in the movie.

There it is. That’s the answer many fans have been wondering ever since 20th Century Fox announced the sequel to 2005’s “Fantastic Four” is going to be called “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer” instead of “FF2.” After all, you can’t have the Silver Surfer without Galactus, right?

Now the question on everyone’s minds is of course, what the hungry, world-devouring master will look like when he arrives on screen on June 15, 2007. Screenwriter Don Payne is coy, but he’s quick to point out “the story definitely focuses more on the Silver Surfer—otherwise it would be called ‘Rise of the Silver Surfer and Galactus,’” he laughs. However, further prodding reveals the purple planet eater, who sends his herald to seek out worlds suitable for him to consume, may not actually be explored as a character, but more as a “force.”

“As far as Galactus goes, the essence will be the same,” Payne maintains, describing the entity as an amalgam of concepts combined with the original “Coming of Galactus” story from Fantastic Four #48. “We’re also using elements from Fantastic Four #57-60, where the Silver Surfer encounters Dr. Doom,” Payne says. “Then there are a couple moments that were inspired by Ultimate Extinction.”

Payne, who’s written and produced “Simpsons” episodes and is coming off penning “My Super Ex-Girlfriend” starring Uma Thurman, has the chops to give FF2 plenty of the foursome’s trademark wit and drama. But better yet, he’s not only a lifelong Silver Surfer fan, he’s a true-blue fanboy. And as such, the writer promises a film true to its Stan Lee/Jack Kirby roots, complete with strong characters, laugh-out-loud situational comedy and, of course, plenty of bizarre and mysterious sci-fi brought to life.

“I think the sci-fi aspects set [the Fantastic Four] apart from other superhero comics,” says Payne. “It will definitely have comedic moments, but it will also have drama and action and amazing visual effects. It’s a fun adventure movie first and foremost.”

Despite his passion for the FF, Payne had his eyes sternly locked on his favorite character of all, who will make his big-screen debut. “I’ve always loved the Surfer,” the writer gushes. “I think he may be the most complex comic character of all time. He’s mysterious and he’s powerful and he’s menacing and he’s aloof but he’s also thoughtful and noble and tragic. He’s made this huge sacrifice and yet he’s bringing about the destruction of countless worlds and civilizations. He feels guilty about it but he has to have this Zen-like detachment.”

“Rise of the Silver Surfer” takes place about a year after director Tim Story’s 2005 film, and Payne has the rundown of what Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic (Ioan Gruffudd), Sue Storm/Invisible Woman (Jessica Alba), Ben Grimm/the Thing (Michael Chiklis) and Johnny Storm/Human Torch (Chris Evans) have been up to between films.

“They’re way better off financially, and you’ll see that reflected in the Baxter Building and in Reed’s lab, both of which have been refurbished,” Payne explains, adding that, in his mind, the team will have had encounters with a few supervillains in that time period. “Reed and Sue are dealing with being celebrities and superheroes and also trying to have a private life. Reed is struggling to retain his status as a respected scientist while also doing the superhero thing.”

Ben Grimm in particular has come a long way from his closeted self-conscious stage seen in the first film. “Ben is more comfortable about being the Thing,” Payne assures, “thanks mostly to his relationship with Alicia [Masters (Kerry Washington)].” The fourth team member is still lighting the world on fire with his signature bravado.

“Johnny is still Johnny,” Payne says, referring to the character’s devil-may-care attitude, “although he’ll have a little bit of introspection about his life and his own unique problems to deal with in this movie.”

As for confirming one of the film’s least-kept secrets, Payne jokes that the wedding between Reed and Sue may be “the most photographed wedding since Prince Charles and Princess Di.” Also, look for a certain metallic-skinned herald to surf into town and throw a wrench into their relationship.

“I wouldn’t say the Surfer is in a love triangle with Sue and Reed, but there’s definitely a connection between Sue and the Surfer,” reveals Payne, who adds that Silver Surfer, a.k.a. Norrin Radd, will show up early on in the film with his Power Cosmic and quickly become sought after by a number of interested parties who want to know what his arrival means and what his purpose is.

And comic fans can rest soundly, as the film aims to keep the shiny-skinned space rover’s look intact. “From what I’ve heard from [director] Tim [Story], Fox and Marvel, the look of the Silver Surfer is going to be as pure to the comics as any fan could hope for,” Payne states. While the Surfer’s origin will be touched on in the film, don’t expect an extended flashback explaining his relationship with Galactus.

“I’m hoping that’s something that would be explored more fully if there’s a Surfer solo film, which I’m hoping there will be,” Payne says. If “Rise of the Silver Surfer” launches well, he may just get his chance to write it. “I’d love to,” he exclaims. “I would definitely like to see more of his origin, either in flashbacks to [his home world of] Zenn-La and [his lover] Shalla Bal and the sacrifice he had to make, or starting from there.”

With all this talk of silvery goodness, let’s not forget a certain cloaked individual who got packed up and shipped off to Latveria at the end of the last film. Dr. Doom (Julian McMahon) will return as an adversary for the Four as well. Besides the fact “he will be unfrozen,” laughs Payne, “In the story, [Doom’s] got a very personal interest in the Silver Surfer and obviously a grudge against the FF. I think people will be happy in the direction he’s going in.”

Payne also threw out a wink to comics fans with the inclusion of the Human Torch’s smoking new love interest, Frankie Raye, played by model-turned actress Beau Garrett. “The fact that in the comics she was linked to Galactus made it too good to pass on,” he says.

And if there’s ever a third Fantastic Four movie, Payne has already got some ideas. “Oh man, there are so many good stories to choose from. If it were up to me, I’d love to do a story about Annihilus and the Negative Zone. Or the Skrulls—I love the Super Skrull. The Puppet Master would be a logical choice since he’s Alicia’s stepfather and therefore has a link already with the FF. I’d love to see the Inhumans. It would be really cool to see [the FF] go up against another group of superpowered beings because it’s something we haven’t seen before. I’d love to see the destruction of Black Bolt’s scream on the big screen. That would be awesome.”

Quote:
Tim Story interview in Total Film

Total Film Magazine recently caught up with director Tim Story, and Mr. Fantastic himself Ioan Gruffudd to discuss the upcoming movie Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. The article, which reveals some new specifics about some of the action sequences in the movie, should be avoided by anyone who doesn't want to be spoiled.

Spoiler (click here to show or hide the text):
Buzz feels Ioan Gruffudd's pain. He's trying to marry Jessica Alba, but it's not happening. The crucial difference here, though, is that Gruffudd is in character on the set of Fantastic Four 2. "We attempt to get married several times in the movie", sighs Gruffudd, "the beginning of the movie is the big wedding ceremony. Just as we're about to say 'I do', the whole world collapses and the Silver Surfer arrives"

Ah, yes, the clue is in the title. FF2's new power player is the reason why everyone is hyped that the sequel will out dazzle the original. "This movie is probably three times bigger than the first", says Tim Story, "Theres the big Johnny/Surfer chase through New York. Another sequence where Dr. Doom battles the Fantastic Four in Shanghai, and then we've got an incredible sequence that involves the London Eye. It's pretty spectacular..."

A huge thanks to Phillip Phonix from Superherohype for this article, and to Total Film for publishing it. The magazine is available in UK stores now.

McMahon on Doom in Fantastic Four 2
"He's not happy"

Julian McMahon revealed details about Dr. Doom in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer to DailyBulletin.com:

"Two years have passed for Doom, trapped in this casket," McMahon says. "Needless to say, he's not happy."

He's also not the only bad guy, competing with the powerful master of energy, the Silver Surfer (Doug Jones, who plays Pan and the Pale Man in "Pan's Labyrinth"). Doom being Doom, he doesn't want to play nice. He wants to take the Surfer's powers.

"Doom hasn't changed he still wants to rule the world and kill the Fantastic Four," McMahon says. "He's a simple man, really. The great thing is, we don't have to waste any time establishing his character. You get the bad guy from the beginning. It's great demonic, cartoony stuff."

Interview mit mit Doug Jones alias Silver Surfer

Quote:
All of the things you’ve said about the Surfer’s backstory... can you say, is that dealt with in the film?
DJ: No, you’re not going to see much. I think he’s introduced in the film much like he’s introduced in the comic book.
C: Okay, just flying in and...
DJ: He comes to earth on his usual, standard, everyday mission for Galactus, seeking out planets that are consumable and destroyable that have the right energy that Galactus can feed on.
C: So, does Galactus play a role in the film? Is he seen in the film?
DJ: Well, that’s where you’re going to get a very nebulous quote from me. All I can say is that you can’t really introduce the Silver Surfer on film without Galactus as some sort of presence.
C: We all know that the Surfer is not a villain. He may have been fighting the Fantastic Four initially, but he’s not a villain.
DJ: No, he’s not on an evil mission to control the universe himself, no, no. Even Galactus, I think, is just hungry, you know. We all need to eat, right?
C: Very true. Okay, you were talking about how the Surfer's backstory is dealt with. He comes in as the harbinger of Galactus. Is his backstory dealt with?
DJ: "Touched on" is the phrasing I would use, but not exposed or shown. There's no need for it in this one. Hopefully, if we get the chance to do a stand-alone film, we can delve more into that.
C: Is that something that has been discussed as a possibility?
DJ: It hasn't been discussed with me as far as, here's a script, here's what we want to do with the character. And this is just me and my opinion, but it would be great to see happen, wouldn't it?
C: Even before the Fantastic Four movies came out, the idea of a Silver Surfer movie has certainly come up over the years. I like that they're introducing the character in a Fantastic Four movie, since that keeps it more faithful with the source material. I should have asked you this when we were talking about the trailer, but the one concern that was voiced about it was that we see the Surfer's eyes. Have you heard this?
DJ: Oh my gosh, the eyes have been talked about constantly. And the opinion is going back and forth, because of course in the comic book they were all white. I don't know, but being that I'm not a comic book purist, I kind of like seeing pupils and irises because I get more of a window to perform that way. That's my personal feeling, but everyone's going to differ on this one. And what you see in the trailer and what the finished product might be could be slightly different.

MICHAEL CHIKLIS AS THE EVER-LOVIN' THING AGAIN IN FANTASTIC FOUR 2

Chances are pretty good, that if you hear the words, “It’s clobbering time!” that the
ever-lovin’ Thing is somewhere nearby. That was true at the Fox winter party for
their new seasons, when Michael Chiklis entered the courtyard. The actor who is as
gruff and loveable as his FANTASTIC FOUR counterpart was only too happy to share
a few minutes with iF MAGAZINE and talk about the new FANTASTIC FOUR: RISE OF
THE SILVER SURFER movie. Fans will be thrilled to hear that they can look for more
comic book phrases from the Thing, and Dr. Doom is out to get trashed by everyone’s
favorite orange rock good guy once again. (click the headline to read the interview)
