Justin Lin Talks Terminator

With the tremendous success of Fast Five still pulling in a fortune at the box office, director Justin Lin has his sights set on his next blockbuster franchise. Lin spoke with MTV News about the recent confirmation that he will direct a fifth Terminator film alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger.

"Everything has just been between me and Arnold, you know?" says Lin in response to rumors that other former actors could return to the franchise, "Just us going out and trying to find the right partners. I have certain elements, but it's never been about, 'Hey, let's bring everybody back!' I just don't process that way."

Though he's light on details, Lin and Schwarzenegger are said to have a clear direction they'd like to take a fifth feature in and it could very well be one that ignores the continuity of the past two films, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines and Terminator Salvation (not to mention the television series "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles").

"I always feel like what's great about the 'Terminator' franchise is that there's time-travel and there are different timelines to play with," Lin explains, "There are also a lot of gaps from what we love about all of the 'Terminator' movies, so there's a lot of things we can do and play with... ['Terminator'] does have that capability, finding fresh ways of going back without destroying other [movies], because you can tell your own stories."

There is currently no definitive timeframe for the potential fifth film, but Lin suggests that things could be solidifying in a matter of weeks.

Megan Ellison Wins Terminator Rights in Auction

Deadline is reporting that Megan Ellison's Annapurna Productions has won an auction for the rights to make at least two more "Terminator" movies, with Justin Lin (Fast Five) directing and Arnold Schwarzenegger returning to the franchise. The site says:

"The deal came down to Ellison's Annapurna Films and Lionsgate, which seemed to have had the project sewn up until she came forward with a dramatic bid. The auction at the time was for a guarantee for at least half of the $29.5 million paid by hedge fund Pacificor to pull the franchise out of bankruptcy."

The deal reportedly closed late Thursday and now Ellison will have to find a distributor for the film. Ellison is also financing Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal's Osama bin Laden movie and John Hillcoat's Wettest County in the World.

‘Terminator’ Reboot to Follow Path Similar to J.J. Abrams’ ‘Star Trek?’

I’ll be back…..with a different actor.

With the rights to the “Terminator” settled, producer Megan Ellison (and daughter of multi-billionaire Larry Ellison) is intent in re-launching the famed franchise.

Hollywood Insider speculated she may take the production of the reboot film similar to J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek” reboot.

Director Justin Lin’s name has been attached to the project. He recently directed “Fast Five.”

No major studio is on board at this time. However, Hollywood Insider reported that Universal Pictures has been showing the most amount of interest in the reboot franchise.

In fact, the site suggested the “Terminator” franchise will be anchored by a younger male lead. The article mentioned Paul Walker’s name in the rumor circles—possibly to play Kyle Reese.

And just like J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek” reboot, many of the original characters will return for the reboot film—but not necessarily the original cast.

For now, take Hollywood Insider’s report as a strong rumor for now. Ellison just won the auction last month at Cannes and she’ll definitely have big plans for the franchise.

One thing for sure, former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s press reps already announced this is one of the projects on hold until he takes care of his personal issues.

Justin Lin Has Terminator 5 Meeting with Cameron and Schwarzenegger

Director Justin Lin met with Arnold Schwarzenegger and James Cameron to discuss the upcoming Terminator 5 project and told The Playlist how grateful he is to have James Cameron to bounce ideas around with:

"Terminator is something I've been having a lot of fun with," Justin Lin said. "Just even this week, I had a great meeting with Arnold and James Cameron, just sitting down unofficially. And James is so gracious because he's not part of the project, he's not going to be producing, but it was great of him just as a filmmaker to take time out to just talk."

"I don't know where it's going to lead, but I never thought at this level I'm going to be able to meet filmmakers and be in situations where they're that gracious and insightful and so inclusive. And that's a franchise that I'm working on right now, but again, if I'm going to be kind of the gatekeeper to it, I want to make sure that I can hopefully build it up the right way - and so far that's been the most fun. Just to be able to take James Cameron's brain and for him to be so open even though he has no stakes in it, just as a human being, that's something that I will always remember as a part of my journey as a filmmaker."

No production date has been set.

Terminator 5 is in development and stars Arnold Schwarzenegger. The film is directed by Justin Lin.

Sarah Connor to Return in "Terminator 5"

There have been rumors that Justin Lin (Fast Five) may be planning to bring back all the major characters from the "Terminator" franchise for the fifth film, which he is currently working on with Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Now in an interview with Moviehole, the director hinted that Sarah Connor will return in the new installment. "Sarah Connor is such a big part of the franchise," he said. "I've always been surprised how in part 3 she was just... It was like one line and she was gone."

Lin continued: "But I think the great thing about this franchise is you can actually have different canons because you have the element of time travel. So, there's a way of kind of respecting all the works but also able to create a new time line."

When asked if this is his plan to right all the wrongs, Lin replied: "Yes."

At this point, there is still no script, which means everything could still change, but it's pretty obvious that Arnold and the Sarah Connor character will definitely be back.

‘Fast’ Schedule Forces Justin Lin To Exit ‘Terminator’, But He Might Be Back

Things are starting to move on The Terminator franchise, but a plan by rights owner Megan Ellison and Arnold Schwarzenegger to put the first of two pictures in production for the fourth quarter of 2012 has forced director Justin Lin to drop out. But borrowing the film’s signature phrase “I’ll be back,” Lin has left the door open to a return if Ellison and Schwarzenegger will wait until he completes the sixth installment of The Fast and the Furious franchise.

The Terminator franchise has been under the radar since Ellison’s Annapurna Films spent over $20 million to buy film rights during the Cannes Film Festival, with Lin and Schwarzenegger attached. Lin wants to make the film but simply won’t be available, the same situation that prompted him to withdraw from Summit’s Highlander. Lin has been working closely with Schwarzenegger and Ellison to figure a way to end the James Cameron-hatched battle between humans and the cyborgs of Skynet. It would require some effort for Ellison to get the film underway by late next year. She hasn’t got a script and I don’t think she’s even hired a screenwriter yet. She also hasn’t set a studio partner, even though several are interested.

There is some reason to move quickly. One of the caveats involved in the rights deal with Pacificor (which spent $29.5 million to win the rights in bankruptcy court) is that certain rights revert back to Cameron due to a stipulation in copyright law that if you assign your rights, you get them back in 35 years. Cameron assigned his rights to Hemdale, and the North American rights will revert back to him in 2018. Even that part of the story has gotten intriguing: While Cameron washed his hands of the Terminator franchise years ago, his close friend Schwarzenegger has dragged him into a brainstorming meeting or two, even though he is not officially involved. It’s also hard to imagine that Ellison can’t make two films and satisfactorily end the series by the time that rights situation develops.

Schwarzenegger hat sich gegenüber collider.com kurz zu T5 geäußert:

“[I’m open to] all those things, if it’s True Lies, Terminator, a well-made Terminator…the last one was awful. It tried hard, not that they didn’t try, the acting and everything. It missed the boat.”
