The Terminator Will be Back for a Fifth Film

Halcyon Co. executives Derek Anderson and Victor Kubicek are developing a fifth installment of the "Terminator" franchise with Terminator Salvation director McG, reports Variety.

The trade says the news came out of the Dubai International Film Festival. McG was in Dubai for the announcement. No decision has been made as to where to film the next "Terminator," although the Middle East was mentioned as a locale.

Christian Bale has signed on in the role of John Connor for all three films in the newly planned trilogy. The next installment, after Terminator Salvation, is tentatively scheduled for a 2011 release.

Anderson and Kubicek had originally planned to wait until the release of Terminator Salvation next summer before deciding on whether to proceed with the next chapter, but the positive studio, fan and media reaction to footage from the current film has encouraged them to move forward ahead of schedule.

"We feel the time is now to start shaping the next part of this," Kubicek said.

[...] Earlier in the Q & A segment of the presentation, McG was asked about the plans to shoot two back-to-back sequels to Terminator Salvation and he released another tidbit of what to expect in a fifth movie if it were to happen. He has spent some time with Jonah Nolan arcing out what the story for the next two movies might be and he hinted that "time travel has yet to be explored" in the upcoming movie, and that it would be one of the themes of the next movie. Since the plot of "Salvation" involves Christian Bale's John Connor trying to save Anton Yelchin's Kyle Reese, who would later go back in time and father John, a sequel may deal with some of the things leading up to Kyle going back in time to save Sarah from the original T-800. Robert Patrick Talks 'Terminator 5'!

I just got back from today's Los Angeles press junket for Alien Trespass, where I spoke with actor Robert Patrick, who does a hilarious turn as a wise-ass small-town cop in the space-invader period flick. And I made sure to tell Patrick about director McG's recent conversation with FEARnet, in which he told us he spoke with the actor about portraying the creator of the T-1000 in a sequel to this summer's Terminator Salvation. So what did Patrick really think of McG's proposal? Would he take on the role?! Hit the jump to find out what he told us!

"Yeah, he talked to me about it," said Patrick. "I’m interested. I was listening to him tell me about it. I had no idea that he thought about that. I love McG. He’s a great guy. I’ve worked with him before, had a great experience working with him both times – I did Charlie’s Angels 2 and We Are Marshall. And I certainly can’t think of anybody to tackle T4 other than him right now. I think he’s got the energy for it and the passion for it. I know he’s a fan of the movies. I think he’ll do a fantastic job. I’m interested to see what Christian Bale does with John Connor. I’m interested to see the whole setting for that. It’s a fantastic franchise, obviously. I mean they’ve got a television show now, The Sarah Connor Chronicles…

"But we saw each other and he talked to me about it, so we’ll see what happens. The sci-fi genre, and specifically that character, is something I’m very proud of. It’s what broke me out big to the world. And it’s a character that I’ve lived with ever since, and I kind of carry it with me everywhere I go, for good or bad. So it’s obviously something that’s very dear to me and real special to me. That was a real special time. That frachise means a lot to me. All of those people were great people to work with. I love ‘em all – Jim Cameron and Arnold and Linda and Eddie. It was a real, real special time in my life."

We'll have the complete transcript of our exclusive inteview with Robert Patrick up soon. So keep checking back!

In einem Artikel über T4 im Total Film Magazin gibt es auch einen kurzen Abschnitt über T5:

Spoiler (click here to show or hide the text):
The fifth picture is likely to be John Connor travelling back in time to present day to thwart off a Skynet attack by galvanising the contemporary military forces of the world. So you'll have Christian in 2010 with the whole world thinking he's insane. Imagine a survivalist creature in our world doing his best to bring the world up to speed on an impending doom... And one could argue he meets his Mother. I strongly suspect Linda Hamilton to be the star of the next film.

Keine Ahnung ob McG das ernst meint. Vielleicht wissen wir nach T4 schon mehr.

In einem Interview mit filmjournal.com über T4 hat sich McG erneut zu T5 geäußert:

Spoiler (click here to show or hide the text):
"I strongly suspect the next movie is going to take place in a [pre-Judgment Day] 2011," McG reveals. "John Connor is going to travel back in time and he's going to have to galvanize the militaries of the world for an impending Skynet invasion. They've figured out time travel to the degree where they can send more than one naked entity. So you're going to have hunter killers and transports and harvesters and everything arriving in our time and Connor fighting back with conventional military warfare, which I think is going to be fucking awesome. I also think he's going to meet a scientist that's going to look a lot like present-day Robert Patrick [who famously played the T-1000 in Terminator 2], talking about stem-cell research and how we can all live as idealized, younger versions of ourselves."

Die neusten Gerüchte besagen das der Film u.a. in London spielen könnte:

I hear from industry sources that yet-to-be-named Terminator 5, the sequel to
Terminator: Salvation, will be set in London in the year 2011, with a time-travelling
John Connor (Christian Bale).

Christian Bale on "Terminator Salvation" Sequel

During the press junket for "Public Enemies," Christian Bale spoke about a possible sequel to "Terminator Salvation," revealing that there hasn't been much movement on it.

"We've had no talks about it or discussions about it," he said, adding that his involvement in a fifth "Terminator" film was not contractually guaranteed. "It all purely depends upon script."

Director McG has stated that he already mapped out the next two films. But since "Terminator Salvation" only earned $120 million domestically on a $200 million budget, Warner Bros may not be too excited about financing a new installment. However, it's not all bad news for "Salvation"; in addition to the $120 million, it has earned $200 million internationally for a worldwide total of $320 million.

McG Tells IESB He's Currently Prepping TERMINATOR 5

Hot off the heels of TERMINATOR SALVATION, director McG says he's already hard at work prepping the next installment regardless of the fan criticism he's received.

He seems to be following the Michael Bay Transformers model and jumping right back into the franchise.

At an interview with the producer/director about HUMAN TARGET his latest dive into TV starring Jackie Earle Haley, McG spoke candidly to IESB about the next TERMINATOR film.

McG: Yeah. I'm prepping 20,000 Leagues, every day, but I'm concurrently prepping Terminator 5, another Terminator picture. So, we're cooking that up. And then, I'm very active in Spring Awakening, the musical, also. So, we'll see. But, my focus, right now, is really pushing forward with 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

IESB: Do you want to take time off between Terminator films?

McG: It's interesting. Obviously, Michael Bay had tremendous success following Transformers, in a very short window. Sometimes people like to take time off, but I'm excited about the next installation of the story, in the Terminator idea.

So, for me, it's terribly exciting to get back out there and show a different face of that idea, and perhaps get out of the apocalyptic world and into a contemporary world. I think the audience is going to be very excited about our way in. I haven't talked to anybody about that yet. You're the first one.

IESB: Do you listen to fan criticism, or is that just too much information?

McG: No, I listen to everything. It's interesting because a lot of people don't like me, but a lot of people just don't like my name. I can't take that too seriously because that's been my name my whole life. It's not something that I prescribed myself. So, I just gotta roll forward and, hopefully, have the films do the talking.

You take your lumps, if they don't like it, and you enjoy it a lot more when they do. We've all been on every side of that, and what can you do, but figure out what you did right and what you did wrong, look at it a little more closely, study the people that you look up to, and continue to evolve as a storyteller.

Laut einem Artikel bei io9.com wird Terminator 5 definitiv kommen:

"Terminator 4 was a big hit, and everybody who was connected with that movie was pretty happy with it, and the're looking forward to a Terminator 5 and a Terminator 6 down the road," says a source familiar with Halcyon. All that needs to happen is for Halcyon to get rid of some liens that its financing company put on its assets (see below) and the company will move forward. (The holding company only filed for Chapter 11, or restructuring, bankruptcy.) Even though Terminator Salvation was more expensive than anticipated — something Halcyon blames on Pacificor — it still made a healthy profit.

Terminator Auctioned Off

The rights to the “Terminator” franchise are being auctioned off this month, according to a story in The Financial Times.

Shingles keeping a close eye on the final selling price include Summit (home of the “Twilight” films), Sony (who distributed the last couple of “Terminator” films internationally), Media Rights Capital (The production company behind "Bruno", "Babel", and Robert Rodriguez's "Shorts"), and Platinum Equity, the Beverly Hills firm that owns Delphi, the auto parts maker.

The franchise is a popular one because, not only is it quite the money-spinner, but no studio controls it. Whoever snaps up the rights to the series are free to do pretty much what they want with it – yep, they can totally overlook “Terminator Salvation” if they wish.

The rights are being sold by Halcyon, the production company behind the dreaded fourth instalment. Halycon filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection after a dispute with Pacificor, a Santa Barbara-based hedge fund that lent Halcyon funds to buy the rights to the popular film series.

The auction does not cover earlier Terminator films.

McG Still Says He's Directing More Terminator Movies

Director McG participated in a BD-Live chat for the Terminator Salvation Blu-ray yesterday and said that he is still planning on directing the fifth and sixth "Terminator" movies.

We're not sure how he knows this considering that the Halcyon group just this week said that they expect their auction for the franchise rights to conclude by February 1st, which means that the current owners of "Terminator" won't have any say in upcoming films.

"Over the past few weeks, Halcyon and its professionals have engaged in in-depth discussions and negotiations with numerous serious potential buyers, including several major movie studios," Halcyon said.

Also, "Salvation" didn't exactly earn big numbers at the box office. The movie carried a production budget of about $200 million, not counting advertising, and made only $371.4 million worldwide. That's $125.3 million domestically and $246 million internationally.

Halcyon Chooses Lionsgate As Stalking Horse Bidder ...
... In Bankruptcy Sale Of Rights To 'The Terminator' Franchise

So what's a stalking horse bid? An initial bid on a bankrupt company's assets from an interested buyer chosen by the bankrupt company. This allows the distressed firm to avoid receiving lowball bids on its assets. That said, I hear Lionsgate will be named the stalking horse bidder in the bankruptcy sale of the Terminator franchise. Sources tell me it wasn't a competitive auction. (Sorry, Joss Whedon, your $10,000 offer for the rights didn't cut it.)

When last we left the tug of war over the future of The Terminator franchise, Halcyon Holding Group announced it was contemplating a sale of the rights after filing for Chapter 11 protection last August as a result of a dispute with Pacificor, a Santa Barbara-based hedge fund that lent Halcyon the sum to buy the Terminator rights in the first place. All the big studios, with Sony leading the way as well as Summit Entertainment and Media Rights Capital, were interested in bidding at a franchise auction for new Terminator films, TV program and other spin-offs. (Because we all know The Sarah Connor Chronicles on Fox did so well, right?)

The sale was being conducted by FTI Capital Advisors for Halcyon which bought the Terminator rights 2 years ago for $25M from Mario Kassar. I think this character/concept is played out. But given the regularity with which Hollywood is now rebooting franchises (Spider-Man is the latest), it pays to remember that even the fanboy dud Terminator 4: Salvation still made $380M worldwide.

Sony Puts in Bid for the Terminator Franchise

Sony has joined Lionsgate in the bidding on the rights to the "Terminator" franchise, reports Variety. The studio submitted a bid on Thursday, the final day for submitting offers.

Lionsgate stepped up last month as the first bidder for the rights to the "Terminator" franchise with a "stalking horse" or floor bid of $15 million and a 5% cut of future gross receipts.

Halcyon Group put the franchise up for sale in September. The auction for the assets--which include the rights to future "Terminator" movies, TV series, DVDs and merchandise--will be held Monday at the offices of FTI Consulting in Los Angeles, followed by a bankruptcy court hearing two days later.

If Lionsgate doesn't win the auction, it will receive $750,000 as a breakup fee from the winning bidder.

'TERMINATOR' RIGHTS SELL FOR $29.5 MIL

I've learned that the auction for the Terminator movie, TV program, and other spin-off rights just ended after a marathon bidding session today that stretched from 3 PM this afternoon until 8 PM tonight. Both Sony Pictures and Lionsgate separately were bidding for the franchise, and then joined up after the first round was completed. "We're going to fight one hell of a fight," a Lionsgate insider told me in advance. Its plans were for "a complete re-boot, back to basics, with real emotional stories, and effects that will be secondary.

Alas, the studios didn't come away the winners -- which, I'm told, prompted a furious Sony Pictures Entertainment's president of worldwide affairs Peter Schlessel to "storm out" of the Downtown LA offices of FTI Capital Advisors holding the auction. (Sony had distributed Terminator 4: Salvation internationally.) Instead, Halcyon Holding Corp accepted the $29.5 million bid from, of all parties, the debtholder which pushed it into bankruptcy, Santa Barbara-based hedge fund Pacificor. (This is the same Pacificor whom Halcyon accused in a lawsuit of extortion, bribery, and fraud and demanded $30M in damages.)

Tonight, Sony and Lionsgate dropped out at just under $29.5 million when it became clear that Pacificor "was willing to pay almost any amount of money for Terminator," an insider tells me. Halcyon will receive $5 million for every Terminator movie made from now on, as well as retains the rich revenue streams from the movies Terminator 3 and 4. Sources behind Halcyon claim to me that the arrangement made now wipes out the debt Halcyon owed to Pacificor and all the other creditors. Of course, the deal is subject to approval by the bankruptcy court. It will be presented to the judge at a hearing on Thursday.

Back on May 9, 2007, rights to the Terminator series passed from producers Andy Vajna and Mario Kassar to the privately funded Halcyon Co (formed by entrepreneurs Victor Kubicek and Derek Anderson) for a reported $30 million. It was Pacificor that lent Halcyon the money to conclude the deal. Once Pacificor pushed Halcyon into Chapter 11, the Terminator franchise went up for sale. Lionsgate was selected as the stalking horse bidder with a ground floor offer of $15 million. Obviously the Hollywood entities kicking the tires on this rights offer, including Summit Entertainment and Media Rights Capital, didn't think this character/concept was played out. After all, Terminator 4: Salvation made $380M worldwide. But who knows what Pacificor will plan for the project now...

Sam Worthington has Ideas for "Terminator Salvation" Sequel

During a press junket for "Clash of the Titans," Sam Worthington revealed to MTV News that he is looking forward to returning for the "Terminator Salvation" sequel. "I really liked playing the [Marcus Wright] character a lot," he said.

Spoiler (click here to show or hide the text):
At the end of "Salvation," Marcus (Worthington) sacrificed himself to save John Connor (Christian Bale). But the actor has already come up with a solution to bring himself back.

"I had an idea that we'd go back in time to when Marcus was first put in jail," Worthington explained, referring to his character's status as a death-row inmate years before being turned into a machine. "They broke Linda Hamilton out of jail in ['Terminator 2: Judgment Day'], out of the nuthouse. In this one, they'd have to go back in time and break Marcus out of jail. It's the same kind of mirror image."

He added that his pitch hasn't been embraced by executives, but he still thinks it would be interesting to resurrect his character. "He would be more fallible, because he's human; he's not metallic," said Worthington. "He can get hurt. He still has the gung-ho attitude, but he can get hurt now."

Terminator Rights Holder Gets Representation

Pacificor LLC announced today that it has retained William Morris Endeavor Entertainment to represent the company in the sale of all rights to the iconic "Terminator" franchise.

Included are rights to exploit the property for film, television, merchandise and multiplayer online games. In addition, WME has been retained to assist the Santa Barbara hedge fund in selecting and retaining key talent for the next sequel in the "Terminator" series.

The "Terminator" franchise has generated more than $3 billion in revenue since the debut of the 1984 sci-fi classic The Terminator, directed by James Cameron and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. In 2008, the Library of Congress added the film to its National Film Registry.

"Terminator's" global fan base has continued to grow through the release of the sequels Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines and last year's Terminator Salvation, as well as from the television series "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles."

"'Terminator' is one of the most recognized global brands in entertainment, and will continue to excite new generations of fans," WME Chief Executive Ari Emanuel said. "We look forward to teaming with Pacificor to fully realize the value of this enduring property."

Added Pacificor Chief Executive Andrew B. Mitchell: "WME provides us with the creative expertise and strategy that will help us identify the right opportunities not only to maximize our investment, but to also make sure the 'Terminator' franchise continues to be treated with the care and respect its fans demand. We are excited to be working with them."

Producer Gale Anne Hurd says she would 'love' to make another Terminator movie

Walking Dead executive producer Gale Anne Hurd has told EW she would “love” to make another Terminator movie. Hurd produced and co-wrote the first Terminator film and for a long period owned half of the rights to the property.

In recent years, the franchise has had mixed fortunes at the box office and has suffered from a string of behind-the-scenes financial problems. The most recent movie, 2009′s McG-directed Terminator Salvation, was produced by a company called Halcyon, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy not long after the film’s release. In February of this year, the Terminator rights were acquired by the California hedge fund Pacificor.

“It’s very sad,” says Hurd of the franchise’s recent history. “You feel like you gave birth to something and it’s been adopted and those adoptions haven’t worked out. Of course I’d be interested in doing another one. I’d love it.”

It is surely only a matter of time before another Terminator movie gets the green light, with or without the participation of Hurd.

With Arnold Back To Acting, Suitors Circle 'Terminator'

Shortly after Arnold Schwarzenegger left the Governor’s Mansion and Tweeted his desire to resume his acting career, there seems to finally be some action on his signature franchise, The Terminator. I’m told that interest is kicking back up. One interested party: Universal, which is looking for a directing vehicle for Justin Lin. He helmed the last three installments of The Fast and the Furious franchise, including the latest Fast Five, which Universal releases April 29. I’ve heard that the plan would be to possibly pair him with Chris Morgan, who aside from Fast Five has credits on big scale Universal films that include the upcoming Keanu Reeves actioner 47 Ronin and Wanted.

Since being acquired in bankruptcy court last February by Santa Monica-based hedge fund Pacificor for $29.5 million, The Terminator has maintained radio silence, surprising given the voracious studio appetite for branded tent pole projects that lend themselves to 3D technology. Part of the reason was the subpar results of the last film, but also the bankruptcy auction which left the two most likely distributors, Sony Pictures and Lionsgate, walking away in disgust. Pacificor, one of the debt holders that forced Halcyon partners Victor Kubicek and Derek Anderson into bankruptcy, was the surprise winner, bidding close to the $30 million that Kubicek and Anderson paid to acquire the rights back in 2007 from producers Andy Vajna and Mario Kassar.

While the bankruptcy approval left open the prospect of an exclusive negotiation for Sony Pictures and Lionsgate for distribution rights, those distributors walked away from the table. Before the bankruptcy happened, McG had been expected to continue the apocalyptic storyline he started with the Christian Bale-Sam Worthington pic Terminator Salvation, but that attachment ended with the bankruptcy. Right around the time the bankruptcy was settled, Deadline also reported that William Wisher--James Cameron's collaborator on Terminator 2 and an uncredited co-writer on the original, wrote a 24-page treatment for the next film and a four-page concept outline for a sixth Terminator film. His version continued the post-apocalyptic battleground scenario from Terminator Salvation, but added in the element of time travel. It will be most interesting to see what shape this franchise takes.

Director Justin Lin Talks about Possibility of Directing a New TERMINATOR Film

In February, we reported that Universal was interested in resurrecting the Terminator franchise with Fast Five director Justin Lin at the helm. Our partners at Omelete spoke with Lin today at the Fast Five press junket and got him to comment on the possibility of reviving the Terminator franchise. Briefly, Lin says he has a take on Terminator he would like to see and that he’s spoken with Arnold Schwarzenegger. However, he’s also looking at other projects and hasn’t decided what will be his next directing gig.

Omelete: Speaking of big-budget movies and studio franchises, there’s a lot of talk about you getting to do the Terminator franchise. Is this happening? Are you looking forward to it?

JUSTIN LIN: I think one of the great things is that when I got started, no one would return my calls, and now I get a lot of phone calls, which is good. I have options. Terminator was one of my favorite films growing up. And I feel I have a take that I would love to see, and I’ve talked with Arnold and we’ve talked and we’ll see. Again, I would love to do it, but it has to be the right circumstances. It has to be the right people. And there’s other projects too. But I’m in a position now that I can choose more than I could a year ago, two years ago. So that is something that is potentially in my future, but when I get home I will sit down and look at my options and choose what I want to do.

Schwarzenegger Will Be Back as Terminator, Justin Lin Directing

Fast Five won't be released in North America until this coming Friday, but it's already doing big business internationally, and director Justin Lin may already have another gig ahead of him, and that's to revive the "Terminator" franchise with former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger returning to his most famous movie role. That's the word according to Deadline who are reporting that Schwarzenegger has attached himself to a package being shopped to studios through the actor-turned-politician's agency CAA.

There is no screenplay or writer at this time, but this is the first activity on the property since Pacificor picked up the rights to the franchise out of bankruptcy auction for $29.5 million, outbidding Lionsgate and Sony. Deadline is reporting that both companies and Universal are looking at the package, and that they would have to get another movie going by 2018 before the rights return to James Cameron. Any movies made that date would belong entirely to whomever finances them, and there are rumors that they are asking for $25 million upfront for the purchase price of $36 million, not including Schwarzenegger or Lin's fees.

If this project does indeed get off the ground, it would be the first new "Terminator" movie since McG's 2009 movie Terminator Salvation starring Sam Worthington and Christian Bale, which grossed $371 million worldwide based on a reported production budget of $200 million

Terminator 5 Goes Back in Time to Original Cast

With whispers of a new Terminator being shopped around, most people were left wondering, "what could they possibly do now!?" Well, that question has (possibly) been answered: go back to the beginning.

"I'll be back."

Schwarzenegger's simple line from the original Terminator became synonymous with the franchise and permanently ingrained itself in the public lexicon. The phrase is impossible to utter in real life without slipping in to a Austrian accent.

The line also became Schwarzenegger's personal mantra, especially when it came to making movies. Few people expected Arnie to pick up a machine gun and shades for another round of robot-busting in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, but that's what happened after his career began to downward spiral in the wake of Collateral Damage. Lesson: don't release a movie about terrorists within a year of 9/11.

Now Schwarzenegger faces the same problem again: roping in an audience that might not give a damn about his giant physique and limited acting range. How do you get them back on board?

"I'll be back."

A few days ago we heard that Schwarzenegger and Justin Lin were shopping around a pitch for Terminator 5, which would see the muscled hero return to the world of purposely stiff line-readings and plentiful gun fire. Details were scarce, but the project had a producer, Lin and Schwarzenegger all on board, with studios like Universal, Sony, Lionsgate, and CBS Films all interested.

Now, thanks to Latino Review, we know why they might be interested. Supposedly, Lin and Schwarzenegger have devised a premise, touted as Terminator 2012, that would take Mr. T-800 back to present day in a new timeline. The film would break continuity from Terminator 3 and Terminator Salvation, functioning similarly to J.J. Abrams' Star Trek. More importantly, Terminator 2012 would open the door for the "original cast" to return.

What does that mean? LR isn't exactly sure, but if they're pitching Terminator with an "original cast," you can bet your ass Linda Hamilton and perhaps the fan-favorite Michael Biehn are possibilities. If Edward Furlong isn't at jail when they shoot the thing, they can throw him in there too.

At first, this sounds like exactly what fans want: a Terminator with all the elements from back when we really cared about Terminator. Even with familiar faces, there may not be any stories left to tell in the universe of the franchise that don't feel forced in to the already-convoluted mythology. Any excitement may stem from pure nostalgia -- remember Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull.

Terminator 5 is heating up whether we want it to or not, so if we have to get excited, at least watching Linda Hamilton blow some killer machines to smithereens has appeal. With the deal in forward motion and studios fighting over the property, expect a formal announcement of some kind at Comic-Con. It's just the place to start the hype machine (as long as Schwarzenegger doesn't have a heart attack in Hall H). "I'll be back."

If you say so.
