Warner Bros. Reboots Terminator
Variety reports that Warner Bros. has acquired North American distribution rights to Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins, triggering an early 2008 production start for a film that seeks to reinvent the cyborg saga with a storyline to be told over a three-movie span.
WB plans to distribute "Terminator Salvation" in summer 2009.
The "Terminator" film franchise got a new lease on life in spring, when privately funded Halcyon and its co-CEOs Victor Kubicek and Derek Anderson teamed with Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines executive producer Moritz Borman to acquire film, merchandising and licensing rights from ex-Carolco partners Andy Vajna and Mario Kassar. Kubicek, Anderson and Borman are producing the new film, with Peter D. Graves as executive producer.
WB had first right of negotiation for domestic theatrical and TV distribution rights because the studio played the same role on 2003's Jonathan Mostow-directed "Terminator 3." The producers said that the new film will carry the size and scale of "Terminator 3," and will have an event-sized budget. Sony Pictures Entertainment, which distributed "Terminator 3" in most overseas territories, is expected to get first crack at a reprise. Several other territories are spoken for, including Japan, where Toho-Towa is expected to distribute once again.
A screenplay has been completed by "Terminator 3" writers John Brancato and Michael Ferris, and the financiers and studio are close to locking a director. While industry buzz has Charlie's Angels director McG as the odds-on favorite for the assignment, the producers said no final decision had yet been made.
"This is set in the future, in a full-scale war between Skynet and humankind," Anderson told the trade.
Borman said: "The third film was really the conclusion of what happened in the 'now.' You will find the most-loved characters, but the intention here is to present a fresh new world and have this be the first of a trilogy." The producers said it wasn't yet clear whether Arnold Schwarzenegger will be back for his fourth appearance in the franchise that launched his movie career. "T3" was the last film in which he starred before becoming governor of California. "We've left it open for him to maybe do a cameo," Borman said. "He has an important job, as we know, and the final decision will be based on his desire and availability, along with what the director wants."

McG Set to Direct Terminator Salvation
While it's been hinted in previous Hollywood trade articles, Moviehole now says it's a done deal - McG will direct Warner Bros. Pictures' Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins, the fourth installment in the popular franchise. Expected to hit theaters in the summer of 2009, "Terminator Salvation" will reinvent the cyborg saga with a storyline to be told over a three-movie span. The film is set in the future, in a full-scale war between Skynet and humankind.
McG directed We Are Marshall for WB and also helmed the "Charlie's Angels" films.

HOW BIG IS CHRISTIAN BALE'S PART?
Last week Harry Knowles and I both learned that Christian Bale would be in Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins. Harry's source told him that Bale would be playing John Connor, while mine wasn't so sure. Harry has assured me that his source is 100% ironclad reliable and certain, so I take the guy's word that Bale is John Connor.
So why was my source so uncertain? I have to imagine that it's because people who have read the script are telling me that John Connor is not the lead. Yes, John Connor leads the rebellion against the machines, but the new film - and apparently the new trilogy - have a different character at the center. Connor is being described to me as a more of a supporting role. I've now heard this from two people, one of whom has been spotlessly accurate in the past, so while I'm treating it as a rumor, I feel like it's a damn solid one.
Bale in a supporting role sort of makes sense. He gets his payday without having to be on set for 120 days or something, and the role of John Connor gets a jolt of familiarity. Casting someone like Bale in a role like that is nice and easy shorthand for the filmmakers. And if John Connor isn't set to make it through the whole trilogy... well, what would be more surprising than offing Christian Bale?
These mysteries should all be cleared up soon enough - I'd expect some official word on Bale and his role in the next few weeks.

Producers on Terminator Salvation
Entertainment Weekly caught up with Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins producers Derek Anderson and Victor Kubicek. They confirmed that Christian Bale is playing John Connor in the first film of the new trilogy and that shooting will start on March 15 in either Australia or Budapest with a budget "north of $150 million."
The two producers also talked about the other major character in the story. Here's a clip:
KUBICEK: The other lead character is a new figure. [Anderson laughs] And it's questionable if he's an enemy or not. That's not necessarily resolved.
ANDERSON: It's a really interesting time in the franchise because it's where all the fans have always wanted the franchise to go, and it hasn't to date, which is the post-apocalyptic world. It's after judgment day. So because we're in a different time in the mythology, it introduces a whole new set of circumstances and characters.
They also talk about whether Arnold Schwarzenegger will return for a cameo and more here.

150 Mio als Budget ... also dann kann es schonmal nicht am Budget liegen wenn der Film nicht gut werden sollte!

THE FUTURE BEGINS HERE
When Ain't It Cool broke the story that Christian Bale was in Terminator 4, playing John Connor, one of my sources became confused. That couldn't be true, I was told - John Connor is barely in the movie. Turns out that it's true, and that yes, John Connor is barely in the movie. Over the last week I have been gathering some details about Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins, and while I am trying to steer clear of serious spoiler material, people who don't want to know anything about this movie should step away from the computer right now.
John Connor is not the main character of Terminator 4; that character is someone named Marcus. Marcus was put 'out of commission' before the nuclear holocaust on Judgment Day and he wakes up about 15 years before the future we see in the original Terminator films, which puts the movie at about 2015 or so. Marcus is a bad ass - think along the lines of Riddick - and what he finds is a blasted world filled with horror. Radiation poisoning, starvation, rampant jaywalking - all the things you expect post-apocalypse. There's also John Connor, who is trying to build a utopian society while running the human resistance.
Connor's role is apparently bigger in the second film; whoever they hire for Marcus (my understanding is that the part is not yet cast) will be around for all three films. Terminator 4 is going to be the most male-centric of all the Terminator films, but there is a butt busting female character by the name of Blair, a pilot for the human resistance.
They're going to need some buttkickers, because the scope of the action in Terminator 4 is HUGE. Lots of machine action in this film, including some battles with the T-600s. Yup, the rubber skin Terminators. And there's another familiar character that shows up - Reese shows up in a scene with John Connor. I don't know what his involvement in the next two films will be, though.
Finally, here's a story point that's probably a legitimate spoiler (although it's sort of the main crux around which the story revolves, so it will probably get blown in the advertising), so I'll invisotext this stuff:
| Spoiler (click here to show or hide the text): |
|
A big aspect of the story is the degrees of difference between a human and a Terminator. By which I mean cyborgs. By which I mean human brains in robot bodies.
|
I've gathered this info from a number of different sources, and while they all have different takes on the material (all mostly positive, with one of my sources saying that the story is great and that the action promises to be incredible), they all bring up one point of comparison: The Matrix films. Make of that what you will. For me, the information I've gotten - including really spoilery stuff I won't inflict on you - has gotten me jazzed. This film feels like it could be epic and erase the taste of the workmanlike T3 from my mouth. Let's hope McG can pull this off.

Producer Moritz Borman on Terminator Salvation
Producer Moritz Borman talked to Empire magazine (via The Sun) about Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins, to be directed by McG starting April 15 in Budapest for a summer 2009 release. Borman says they are keeping the script "under very tight security" because "we have a huge twist at the end, which we're being careful not to reveal. Like with the last 'Terminator' — we kept that under tight wraps so not even the crew got the last six or seven pages.
"I can tell you this much — this is the story everybody has been waiting for," he added. "Namely, we're in the future. The part of it where Arnold's character has not yet been built but is on the drawing board. And in the next two episodes we'll get to the point where time-travel is more in the foreground. It's the war against the machines, the start of Skynet taking over the world."
Borman hinted that Californian governor Arnold Schwarzenegger could be part of the two subsequent movies. "It's convenient that he hasn't been built at this point of the story, as Arnold has more important things to do right now, but that doesn't mean he might not re-appear later in the trilogy," he said. "He knows the material and is very supportive of what we're doing. There might even be hints of his character in this one."
Borman refused to confirm that Christian Bale (The Dark Knight) is playing John Connor. "Everyone is assuming there is a John Connor and a Terminator in the script. Connor is in there along with another figure, but who is that figure?"

Terminator 4 Rumors Addressed
James Middleton, an associate producer on the upcoming fourth Terminator film, told SCI FI Wire that California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger will definitely not be in the movie or any of the contemplated sequels in what is expected to be a new trilogy of films.
Middleton also disputed earlier reports about the role of John Connor, saying that the character will definitely be central in the film, titled Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins. Middleton said that the movie will also introduce a key new character.
"It's post-apocalyptic," Middleton said in an interview at Los Angeles' Golden Apple comic shop, where he was promoting the upcoming FOX TV series Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (Middleton is a consulting producer on the show).
"It's set after the events of [Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines], where we see the nuclear exchange at the end of the movie, and we show what the world is like after this event, and we show how people try to deal in a post-apocalyptic world," Middleton added. "And we introduce a new character, who becomes very important to the resistance and to John Connor, a new hero. It's really about the birth of a new hero."
As for John Connor, who was played in T3 by Nick Stahl: "I would look at him as a character that is introduced and that will grow in the second and third movies of the trilogy," Middleton said. No actor has been chosen yet to play Connor in Terminator Salvation, though Batman Begins star Christian Bale is rumored to be in line for the role.
With regard to Schwarzenegger, Middleton said the original cyborg was approached about a possible role or cameo before he was elected to the governorship of the Golden State.
"He has been approached, and in the early days of our development of T4, one of our producers, Andy Vajna, who's a good friend of his, spoke to him about doing a cameo," Middleton said. "This was even before he was governor. But we know now that he is governor, he's got priorities that are above doing movies." There is no possibility of Schwarzenegger appearing in Terminator Salvation or subsequent films as long as he is governor, Middleton added.
T3 writers Michael Ferris and John D. Brancato penned the script for Terminator Salvation, which will be helmed by McG. "We're in active preproduction," Middleton said. "We hope that the [writers'] strike ends soon so we can do a rewrite, but we're planning on going into production in April."
What about the new character? Contrary to some speculation, it won't be Kyle Reese, the character from the first film who was played by Michael Biehn and who goes on to father John Connor, Middleton said. Terminator Salvation is slated to hit theaters in 2009.

Is Josh Brolin the New Terminator?
In a new interview with The Two-One-Three, Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins director McG hinted that No Country for Old Men star Josh Brolin might play the new Terminator opposite Christian Bale's John Connor.
"We're prepping the picture right now. The script is largely done, whether or not we're able to prep off of it, obviously we want to continue to work on it, punch it up and we're hoping for an expedient finish to the writer's strike. But I've got my fingers crossed that in a week or two it will be over," McG said.
He added that the fourth film will take place "post Judgment day. So there really is no continuation, you know what I mean? Its sort of a different animal, whereas the first two pictures on this thing are Terminators from the future, this picture takes place in 2019."
There's been rumors that John Connor will only be a small part in the film. Not so, says McG. "John Connor's a major player in it - Christian Bale's playing that part."
Asked who his "dream Terminator" would be? McG revealed, "...And there's guys out there like Russell Crowe and Eric Bana, bring a good physicality, they do what they do, but I don't know if they're exactly right at the end of the day. (Smiles) Josh Brolin is a very exciting actor - we'll see."

Worthington to Star in Terminator
Sam Worthington will star in Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins, reports Variety.
The fact the Australian actor just played the lead in the James Cameron-directed Avatar is no coincidence, added the trade. Cameron recommended Worthington to "Terminator Salvation" director McG, indicating that the director of the first two "Terminator" installments might be warming to the new pic.
Worthington will play the role of Marcus, a central figure in a three-picture arc that begins after Skynet has destroyed much of humanity in a nuclear holocaust. A group of survivors led by John Connor (Christian Bale) struggles to keep the machines from finishing the job.
Variety says McG spoke on the phone recently with Cameron, who is in New Zealand working on Avatar. It was during that chat that he recommended Worthington, who in Avatar plays a paraplegic war veteran from Earth who's brought to another planet inhabited by a race of humanoids at odds with Earth's inhabitants.
"Terminator Salvation" is targeting a summer 2009 release.

Terminator Salvation Targeting PG-13 Rating
Variety reports that with production starting today on Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins, producers at the Halcyon Co. say they aim to deliver a PG-13 movie to Warner Bros. for release on May 22, 2009.
The "Terminator" series is one of the highest-grossing R-rated franchises of all time, with the first three films having grossed more than $1.03 billion worldwide. "The ratings have changed," said Halcyon co-founder and co-CEO Victor Kubicek, a broker-turned-writer-producer. "The PG-13 has increased in intensity."
A family-friendly rating opens many doors, including a "Terminator Salvation" licensing deal for action figures with Playmates Toys.
"Our merchandising program will be the largest to date for 'The Terminator,' " said Halcyon co-founder and co-CEO Derek Anderson, ex-owner of ad agency In the Mix, who adds that he had not discussed the possibility of an R-rating with Warners. "We won't force it. We are carrying on in the tradition of the mythology, with an exciting approach to the action. If we can make a compelling film to reach the widest audience, why wouldn't we do it?"
Halcyon has already launched Halcyon Games to create a "Terminator" game for release at the same time as the movie. "The first three games were all bad," Anderson said. "The core fans are screaming for something fresh; they won't be just playing the movie."
Set in post-apocalyptic 2029, an adult John Connor, played by Christian Bale, leads the war to save humanity from the killing machines. Sam Worthington, Anton Yelchin and Moon Bloodgood co-star.

Bale Signed for All Three Terminator Films
Christian Bale is to play rebel leader John Connor in three sequels to the "Terminator" franchise, starting with Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins, according to BBC News:
The Welsh-born star, who is soon to be seen in Batman Begins sequel The Dark Knight, has already started shooting the first of those films, Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins. "He's really an actor's actor, so we're very proud," said Victor Kubicek of film company Halcyon. "Christian was our first choice and he's a big fan of The Terminator, so we're very lucky," Kubicek told the BBC at the Cannes Film Festival. "But with Batman he's already done the whole franchise thing, so we weren't sure he'd respond. Luckily," said Kubicek's business partner Derek Anderson, "he read the script and he loved it, so he's signed on for all three."
The first new installment, co-starring Sam Worthington, Anton Yelchin and Moon Bloodgood, centers on John Connor, now in his 30s, who leads what is left of the human race in a battle against the machines. Directed by McG, Warner Bros. will release the film on May 22, 2009.

Bryce Dallas Howard Joining Terminator
Source: The Hollywood Reporter, June 2, 2008
Bryce Dallas Howard is in negotiations to replace Charlotte Gainsbourg in Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins, says The Hollywood Reporter.
Gainsbourg was originally set to play Kate Connor, the wife of human resistance hero John Connor (Christian Bale). The actress had to bow out because of scheduling conflicts with another film, a French comedy.
Production on "Terminator," directed by McG, is already underway in New Mexico. If an actors strike were to happen, shooting would stop and then restart at a later date.
Howard last starred as Gwen Stacy in Spider-Man 3 and next stars in the The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond. |

McG hat sich auf der offiziellen Seite wieder zu Wort gemeldet:

One Possible Future
We're in the middle of week five. The New Mexico wind is kicking the shit out of the crew but providing a perfect backdrop for our post-apocalyptic world.
Sam tore a muscle on the left side of his ribs in a fight sequence. Neither of us wants to use a stunt double.
This movie takes place several years after Judgment Day, but prior to 2029. Just like it took a long time to get an HD plasma screen in our world, it took Skynet a lot of research and development to get to the T-800, and this movie explores that "space between." We have all been fascinated with the world after Judgment Day. Here it is.
In this film, there are Hydrobots that patrol the water, Transports that move human prisoners around, Harvesters that collect human beings as lab rats for Skynet and Aerostats that survey all that is going on with the resistance the world over.
We've started shooting the T-600 - the bigger, grimier, nastier version that preceded the T-800.
Like Reese says, they're easier to spot but they pack a mini gun and carry kick ass fire power. They're eight-foot tall killers that prowl the badlands looking for anything with a heartbeat to terminate.
Stan Winston, Production Designer Martin Laing and ILM came up with the designs and that thing is on Kyle Reese's ass throughout the entire picture. Wanted to achieve that bummer, rubbery skin, prosthetic look that cloaks an unrelenting machine with a singular focus of killing.
More to come...
Also, I realize my name is ridiculous. I was born Joseph McGinty Nichol. McG is short for McGinty. I have been called this since the day I was born to create separation from my Uncle Joe and Grandpa Joe. I realize it sounds like some Hollywood nickname, hip-hop choice. But the truth is, this is simply my name - for every day of elementary school, every zit-filled day of high school. I have been taking shit for it ever since. I get it, I would think it's lame too. But it's just a name, and to change it now would seem fraudulent.
Oh yeah, don't get too uptight about the prospect of the film being PG-13. We have entertained the idea of a PG-13 rating largely because Batman Begins, in my opinion, was made compromise-free. So we'll see. The movie comes first and it will be protected at all times…
By the way, there are only three people who know the ending.
The unknown future rolls toward us.

Außerdem gibt es bei chud.com einen heftigen Spoiler, den ich besser nicht gelesen hätte. Aber vielleicht ist der auch falsch.
