20th Century Fox's official number for "Avatar" domestically is $77,025,481, which falls just short of "I Am Legend's" record of $77,211,321. Internationally the confirmed number is $165.5 million, putting the film's worldwide total at $242.5 million so far. (comingsoon.net)

Avatar Pockets Another $16 Million Tuesday!

After earning an impressive $16.4 million domestically on Monday, James Cameron's Avatar added another $16.1 million on Tuesday! That's the second-highest number for a non-opening film ever (behind The Dark Knight's $20.9 million) and third-biggest Tuesday of all-time, trailing only The Dark Knight and Transformers, which opened on a Tuesday in 2007 and earned $27.9 million.

The blockbuster film has now reached $109.5 million in North America after just five days in theaters.

Overseas, the 20th Century Fox release has reached $191.8 million for a worldwide total of $301.3 million already.

In their first day of head-to-head competition Alvin beat Avatar by a wide margin. Early reports indicate that on Wednesday, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel with a first-day estimated total of $20 million bested the 3D blockbuster, which managed to scrape up "only" $16 million ...

Cameron's Avatar Has Itself a Merry BIG X-Mas!

This was a banner Christmas weekend, ending a year where the box office was generally up from last year with not only the biggest Christmas weekend ever, but a historic record-setting weekend with the Top 4 grossing more than $200 million on their own, and the Top 10 grossing $260 million, up nearly $100 million (!) from Christmas weekend last year.

Much of that record can be accounted for by three movies and leading the way was James Cameron's unstoppable sci-fi epic Avatar (20th Century Fox), which once again took first place with an estimated $75 million over the three days to set a new Christmas weekend record. The previous record holder was Meet the Fockers with $46.1 million in 2005. Down less than 3% from its opening weekend, Avatar also holds claim to the second-biggest second weekend ever for a movie ever, right after last year's gigantic blockbuster hit The Dark Knight. Having grossed $212 million in ten days--the seventh movie to cross $200 million and currently the seventh highest grossing movie of the year--Avatar is clearly on its way to top $300 million. The question is whether it can pass the $402 million made by Michael Bay's Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen to take over the top spot as the highest-grossing movie of 2009. By comparison, The Dark Knight had grossed $100 million more than Avatar after ten days, so Cameron has a long way to go if he wants his new movie to take its rightful place behind his previous dramatic feature Titanic as the second-highest grossing movie domestically of all time.

Internationally, Avatar added $145 million this weekend to push its worldwide total to an amazing $617.3 million after just 10 days in release.

Avatar Soars Past $700M Worldwide in 12 Days

James Cameron's Avatar grossed another $18.29 million on Tuesday to push its domestic total to an impressive $250.4 million after just 12 days. The $18.29 million is an increase over last Tuesday's $16.1 million and both numbers trail only The Dark Knight's $20.9 million on the all-time non-opening Tuesday list. Internationally, the blockbuster has reached $476.2 million as of the 29th for a combined worldwide total of $726.6 million! Percentage-wise, the domestic take is 34.5% and the international take is 65.6% of that massive total.

Avatar Kicks Off New Year with New Records!

James Cameron's Avatar (20th Century Fox) continues to be one of the biggest box office phenomenons of the decade--much like Titanic in the prior decade--having grossed $350 million after just 17 days and crossing the one billion mark worldwide. It set a new Near Year's Day weekend box office record with its estimated $68.3 million, down just 10% from Christmas weekend and making it the highest third weekend gross for a movie domestically.

By next weekend, Cameron's comeback will hit the $400 million mark and by next Sunday, it should pass Michael Bay's Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen to become the highest-grossing movie of 2009, as well as breaking into the Top 10 highest-grossing movies (domestically) of all time.

Internationally, Avatar has grossed $670.2 million which brings its worldwide total to $1.02 billion, making it the third-highest grossing movie worldwide EVER, and that's after being in theaters for only 17 days, too. It has surpassed the worldwide gross for The Dark Knight and only needs $46 million more to beat Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. (Currently, Cameron's Titanic still holds the worldwide grossing record with $1.84 billion with $600 million of that domestically.)

What's so remarkable about the movie's success, besides how much of that money is being made in 3D and IMAX venues (with many daily sell-outs still being reported ), is that Avatar is also the biggest non-sequel since George Lucas' original Star Wars and Steven Spielberg's E.T.: The Extraterrestrial. By the end of January, it should have surpassed both of their non-adjusted box office takes. It's still a few days behind Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight, which had the benefits of opening in summer, while Avatar will be facing moviegoers' return to school and work starting tomorrow, so we'll have to see whether it can cross the $533 million mark to become the second-highest grossing movie after Cameron's own Titanic.

Avatar Box Office and Sequel Update

James Cameron's unstoppable Avatar is entering its fifth weekend with more dominant ticket sales. Fandango tells us that 80% of its ticket sales for Avatar have been for the 3D and IMAX screenings and for the fifth weekend, 73% of its advanced ticket sales are for Avatar, followed by The Book of Eli with 7% and The Lovely Bones with 5%.

Worldwide, the film has earned $1.42 billion and has just passed up Shrek 2's $441.2 million to climb to the fourth spot on the all-time domestic list with $445.7 million. It only trails Star Wars ($460.9 million), The Dark Knight ($533.3 million) and Titanic ($600.8 million) now.

In sequel news, James Cameron told Entertainment Weekly that he was even planning a sequel during production. "I've had a storyline in mind from the start - there are even scenes in 'Avatar' that I kept in because they lead to the sequel," Cameron said. "It just makes sense to think of it as a two or three film arc, in terms of the business plan. The CG plants and trees and creatures and the musculo-skeletal rigging of the main characters — that all takes an enormous amount of time to create. It'd be a waste not to use it again."

Quote:
James Cameron Talks 'Avatar' Sequel, Deleted Sex Scenes

Before taking home six Critics' Choice Movie Awards, the director gave us the scoop on the upcoming DVD.

On Friday night (January 15), James Cameron slipped into a tuxedo and descended on the Critics' Choice Movie Awards, stepping into an unfamiliar world like "Avatar" hero Jake Sully arriving on Pandora. Much like the Sam Worthington character in one of the biggest blockbusters ever made, Cameron's mission would be a success — one that would grab him six awards. In other ways, however, it was more like a victory lap.

"Thanks to that MTV online event, you launched the picture!" he grinned when he saw the MTV News team on the red carpet, remembering our exclusive "Avatar" event in early December. "And look what happened!"

Some people would say that a billion-plus dollars at the box office would automatically green-light a sequel. "Yes, now we just have to come up with an idea," Cameron joked. "I have a 6,000-page outline. Now, if I could just reduce that to a shoot-able script."

Before he makes the sequel, however, Cameron said he might step away from Pandora for a while. "There's some possibility of doing another film in between," explained the filmmaker, who has been absent from the awards-season scene since he similarly blew through it in 1997 with "Titanic." "But we'll certainly get busy talking about what the strategy is [for an 'Avatar' sequel], whether it makes sense to do it and laying any technical groundwork that needs to be done. These are big projects."

As for recent speculation over the leaked "Avatar" script that supposedly revealed extended intimacy between the film's lead characters, Cameron said he was getting a kick out of the chatter. "We took a good 10 seconds out of that scene. So people shouldn't [get too worked up over it]," he grinned. "I think it's one of those cases where the fantasy vastly exceeds the reality."

Still, fans can look for that scene — and others — in an upcoming DVD that Cameron is compiling, but one that he stopped short of labeling with a phrase we hear all too often. "The 'director's cut' is what we release," Cameron said. "What we do is we do a special edition, where you could select a longer version of the film that has some scenes reinstated. But it's really more of a fan version than a director's version.

"[The fan version] will be 10 or 12 minutes longer," he revealed. "Something like that."

Finally, Cameron had some advice for those who suffer from the newly coined affliction "Avatar blues," supposedly resulting from exposure to a land far more beautiful than their own. "Take a walk in the woods," he said to sufferers. "Reacquaint with the nature we have right here."

(mtv.com)

Außerdem hat 20th Century Fox folgende Zahlen bekanntgegeben:

International weekend = $125M
International cume = $1.115B
Domestic weekend = $41.3M
Domestic cume = $491.8M
Worldwide cume = $1.606B

AVATAR - AUFBRUCH NACH PANDORA seit 17.
